Review: I know I’m going to sound like a broken record here, but Kol Anderson never ceases to amaze me. He’s done it again in this next installment of The Broken series.
For those of us who have followed this series faithfully, we know it must be read in order. So, for those who have just discovered Kol Anderson, it is highly recommended to read from the beginning. Since this installment covers a lot of characters, past and present, I’m going to break down each one individually. So here goes my interpretation of each character who was given page time…
Carter: I loved this character from the beginning. To think he was going to be put through the same abuse and torture as Aaron made me so sad and angry. Here he was, minding his own business, being his happy go lucky self, only to get swept up in something so dark he can’t even begin to comprehend what is about to happen. Now, we know he’s has been reconditioned to please his new owner. We don’t know much about this mysterious man/owner, who has a peculiar bedside manner. What we do know, from being inside Carter’s head, is that this new owner doesn’t seem to be paying him any attention. It’s got Carter a little worried, and he’s doesn’t know what to do about it. As I’m reading this, I would think he’d be relieved not to be the center of attention, but it’s just the opposite. He wants to be used, he longs for a touch, any touch, whether it be hard and cruel or soft and loving. It makes me wonder if he’s too far gone to save. Have they broken him so much that he’ll never find his way back? We do see little snippets of the old Carter. I really felt he would keep his head about him I just hope it’s not too late.
Joshua is Carter’s boyfriend. I’m not all too sure why the author has us seeing him. Maybe it’s to give the reader some hope that Carter is actively being searched for, that he’s not forgotten. The scene we see with him doesn’t really give us any clues. It just made me wonder what the hell is up with him. Hopefully, we’ll be seeing more of him in the future.
Aaron is still with us. We’re seeing him still affected and healing from his time with Vincent. He’s obsessed with his “replacement” and wants to help in any way he can. He can’t help but feel responsible for Carter’s predicament.
Vincent: oh, how I want to hate him, but I can’t. Knowing his history and what led him to be where he is now, I feel nothing but pity for him. I’m still not sure what’s going to happen between him and Aaron. He keeps reaching out to Aaron, opening up to him. Can it be he wants to save both of them? I just don’t know.
Eric is up to no good and all I want to do is scream at Aaron to stay away from him. I’m not 100% sure what his role is in all of this, I haven’t figured him out yet. I do know he’s not at all what he seems to be.
As with all of Kol Anderson books, we’re given just enough information to think we know the where, what, why and when. We then peek around the corner, or in this case, turn the page, and everything we thought to be true is blown to bits and we’re left with our jaws hanging open, wondering where in the hell did that come from. This is what I love about this author, the element of surprise, the mind boggling “WTF?” moments, the “holy shit” endings. It’s what keeps me coming back for more every single time.
I implore those who haven’t yet jumped into Kol Anderson’s world, to do so now. You won’t be disappointed.
