Review: Just reading the introduction to Accidental Contact and Other Mahu Investigations gave me goose bumps because I was revisiting my favorite Hawaiian detective. Yes, this is going to be that type of review! LOL.
I read the first Mahu detective book a couple of years ago and fell totally, irrevocable in love with Kimo Kanapaka! This review will be short and sweet because I don’t know what else to say but that you must read this book!
These short stories are about two characters, Kimo and the Island of Hawaii. Both are complicated, with many layers, and change in a blink of an eye. What got me so excited was that Kimo and Mike finally became parents. Mike is Kimo’s smoking hot, fireman partner, and their relationship pushed every button for me. I highly recommend reading the books just for their complicated love. The supporting characters, which include extended family and friends, are so rich they could have their own stories. I love Kimo’s family and their steadfast love and support of each other.
The crazy cases that Kimo works on are totally implausible but in the end, totally plausible. There’s a mix of gore, fun and sex, a as I mentioned earlier, Hawaii is a character and a much beloved one. We get to see the underbelly of paradise, and sometimes it’s not always pretty. It can be gritty and sad.
If you are a fan of Neil Plakcy’s Mahu series, then this collection of stories will be a great addition to your reading list. And if this is your introduction, I highly recommend picking up the entire series because it’s just a wonderful story that needs to be read. Now I just want more.
