I appreciate you hosting me today for the Undercover Addiction tour! Even though Washington isn’t known for its beaches, the imagery used throughout Undercover Addiction is ocean-related. Connor leaves the safety of the shore in order to swim with monsters in deep waters. His partner with Seattle PD, Lucas, is his lighthouse or solid ground he can grab before his head is dragged underwater. The thrill of deep water sends Connor out time and time again until the safe shallow waters begin to bore him.
Going undercover is dangerous. Connor could lose his way back to the beach, drown, or be discovered by the monsters and consumed. After meeting Riley outside of his assignment and his undercover alias, Connor struggles to adapt back to his role as his cover, Caleb. The witnessed horrors shake him deeper than before when he had his façade of Caleb to dull the reality.
Despite his concerns about staying afloat in dark water with Riley and his associates, Connor is headstrong enough to continue. The assignment changes his life in more ways than he ever expected.
Connor is someone who shows a different face to those around him to conceal his true thoughts. He lies to his sergeant to keep the case with Riley, and keeps most of his opinions about the case from the FBI—including his changing view of Riley. Connor was interesting to write because he holds much of his thoughts so close. He most freely opens up to his friend, Lucas, but Riley manages to break down his walls more than once.
Blurb:
Working Vice for the Seattle PD, Connor Bishop’s favorite part of the job is going undercover. His current assignment is to get close to Riley Drapeau, a human trafficker backed into a corner by the FBI and turned informant. Connor needs to milk him for information on his organization, but while doing so, sees an entirely different Riley than he expected.
Caught off balance, Connor relies heavily on Lucas, his outside man and only link to the real world, but he gets sucked in by Riley and his attempt to clear his name and prove his partners fabricated evidence to frame him.
Up to his eyeballs in the dark world of trafficking, Connor finds it easier to believe Riley than what the FBI is saying, especially when a leak is uncovered within the Bureau. The choices Connor has to make become even more difficult when Lucas admits he has feelings for him and promises a safe life far from harm. But Connor can’t deny the only man he wants to be with is Riley. Which forces him to decide if his addiction to the dangerous side of life can include loving a criminal.
Excerpt:
“I can’t expect the truth from you, but I can only hope you’re honest with me. I need to know something.”
“What is it?”
“I’ve seen what’s left of the people who cross you and your partners. Anyone can kill someone, but to torture them is different. Evidence of pain inflicted is highlighted to scare others from crossing a person or his organization. To torture a person to death sends a message.”
“Are you asking if I’ve murdered people who have crossed me or my associates?”
“I am.” Connor lowered the bag and locked his gaze with Riley’s across the bar. “You’re in charge of making things run smoothly, and your apprentice just so happens to have an affinity for violence.”
“But if that’s the case, you’re willingly sleeping with a man you believe capable of torture on a level that sickens the weak hearted on an investigative team.”
“I guess I am.”
“What does that say about you? You’re completely aware of what type of monster I am, but yet you’ve shown no hesitance in bed.”
Connor looked away. “I’m aware of what type of person I am. I don’t need you to point it out.”
“Are you afraid of me, Connor?”
“No. You can kill me. You can torture me. I’d prefer neither to happen, but I can’t control it either.”
“What a strange way of thinking.”
