Finding Common Ground
Sometimes when I write books it’s obvious what draws each character to each other. They have a common ground—that something which makes them a good match. Other times it’s not so obvious even if characters have common interests or things like that. I love doing either type of story and it’s up to me to find that common ground even if there doesn’t seem to be any that is there for anyone to see. Each type of book has its own merits and fun attached to writing it.
With each type of story I get to bring the characters together. I get to let them find out things about each other then find that thing that makes them work. It could be something as simple as enjoying the same TV shows or sports. Or complex as having similar life experiences. No matter which it is, the characters are building something.
In Best Laid Intentions (Impressions #6) my characters have music in common. Savage is a musician and he uses his art to communicate. Whereas Taylor owns a music store and he loves music. His love of music makes him want to extend that to others. He uses his store to do that and the selfless way he does it makes Savage respect the man even more. Savage himself also has things he does that makes Taylor admire him. His teaching Taylor’s brother more about guitars is one of them. Savage has a big heart and has a great sense of humor. As each man gets to know each other beyond the desire they find out more than they expected about each other.
These unexpected discoveries lay the groundwork for them uncovering more about themselves leading them to being a fit for each other. These men tease and open up as they get to know each other. As they do this they become more willing to let each other deeper into their lives. There are sexy moments where they are flirting and tempting each other, which adds even more dimensions to their story. As they get even more used to each other it is n journey they will enjoy. In Best Laid Intentions (Impressions #6) Savage and Taylor experiences twists and turns as they try to figure out if they can work as a couple. That common point of music brings them closer together. There finding common ground makes them have something to build on.
