The Novel Approach welcomes Posy Roberts today on the Tangled Mind blog tour. Will Parkinson asked Posy what drew her to the M/M romance genre. This is what she had to say:
My quick and trite answer is: If one man is fun to read about then two together are even better. The honest answer is a lot longer and much more personal, but I’ll try to give you the condensed version.
I love writing about two characters, who, at first glance, walk in as equals not carrying much societal baggage that differs. With same-sex couples, the Mars/Venus crap is simply not there. I’m allowed to create the power differentials I want to explore rather than trying to fight off stereotypes before I can even start telling my story. There are still assumptions made about characters, but it feels like less of a “contest between the sexes” in M/M and F/F than in M/F stories. I don’t play that game in real life, so I certainly don’t want to in my writing life.
Yet, it’s human nature to categorize, and many people still want their characters to fit into neat little boxes as manly men, queens, submissives, and so on. I like messing with that too, writing about men who are their own people who don’t easily fit. I’ve never fit into categories people tried to place me in, and I feel like the M/M genre is much more open to exploring this than the M/F genre is. I hope that changes in the M/F future, but first we need to get rid of the Mars/Venus mentality.
Now, here’s a little bit about the book, Posy Roberts herself, and her giveaway.
Enjoy and good luck!
Blurb: For years Beck Lund has taken care of his volatile boyfriend Brady, always putting Brady’s needs above his own and walking on eggshells to keep the peace. After Brady overdoses on heroin, his death devastates Beck. Thankfully his best friend, Timothy Kallis, finds him the help he needs. Beck slowly starts to recover and moves in with Timothy to get back on his feet, but he’s oblivious that Timothy is secretly nursing romantic affection for him.
Beck focuses on his own healing for the first time in his life. After months of challenging his codependent tendencies and learning how to stand up for himself, Beck finally starts to trust his gut and hopes to one day love again. Timothy is patient throughout, taking care of Beck in ways no one ever has. But if Beck can’t recognize Timothy’s affection for him, it might be too late for them to move beyond friendship.
