Blurb: ER physician’s assistant Hunter guards his heart carefully, but that doesn’t stop him from falling for Shawn, the front desk clerk. He keeps his distance from relationships for a reason, but just can’t help himself when it comes to Shawn.
Shawn is on the run from the law and love to protect himself and anyone else involved. One man is dead because of him, and his life now is simple and easily thrown into a bag at any hint of danger–until he meets Hunter and he no longer wants to run.
Forced into a hostage situation, buried passion explodes in the aftermath, and sex in the supply closet brings their hearts back to life. Tentatively, step by step, they begin to explore a relationship together until the past catches up with Shawn.
Review: This is my first time reading this author and it won’t be my last.
I really enjoyed this book. It had a little bit of everything: a budding romance, suspense, mystery, and a lot of action. From the beginning to the end, this story moved very quickly, barely letting the reader take a breath. I loved that.
As the blurb lets us know, Shawn is on the run from the law. He comes off as a bit of a loner, but when we find out his background we know why he is the way he is. Hunter, a physician’s assistant, has a major crush on Shawn. An ER ambush and hostage situation at the hospital where they both work leaves both men rattled. And inadvertently brings them together.
What I loved most about this book was the fast paced action. It. Never. Stopped. We have two main characters, both dealing with some pretty heavy baggage. Brought together in the most surreal way, they just can’t seem to get enough of each other. As the story moves along and we get to know what’s going on with both characters, especially Shawn, I had a whole lot of “holy shit” moments, definitely in a good way.
The storyline was fantastic, so well done that I had constant visuals as every scene played out in my head while reading. FBI agents, gangsters, murder, car chases, it’s all here. I loved every minute of it. The twists and turns in this book, along with the backstories of the characters, really made this a very intense read, for me anyway.
Now, while everything is going on around them, Hunter and Shawn are really trying to make a go of it, relationship-wise. When they do get together, it’s pretty hot and pleasantly satisfying to read. But they have a lot they’re dealing with, so the romance is definitely on the back burner for now. Do I think they’ll come out of this and get their HEA? I would like to think so. To me, they were just two guys who were dealt a crappy hand in life, ending up in a bad place through no fault of their own. They are so likable and sweet, I for one want them to come out on the other side together and happy.
The one character I loved to hate was Nick. Throughout the story, I wasn’t always sure what side of the fence he was on. He was a likable enough character to pique my interest and want to know more about him.
I was really glad to hear that the author is planning a sequel for Hitting Black Ice. I say this because the ending felt a little rushed and open ended to me. So, if you’re not a fan of not-so-closed-up endings, you may want to wait for the sequel. Either way, just don’t miss out on this one.
