The One Where Sue Breaks the Rules
You know and I know that I have a habit of writing difficult storylines where the characters aren’t always sympathetic. In fact, Stolen Dreams was rejected by the first publisher I submitted it to for having unsympathetic characters from the get-go. There we are. I’ve never admitted that in public before. *hangs head* I don’t mean to, honest. I just like writing men who aren’t picture perfect and who screw up (is that Brit-speak?) big-time.
Stolen Dreams, The Night Porter, Nothing Ever Happens, Falling for Ramos, Final Admission – all of them have men who don’t follow the Romance code. By the way, I really need to read the Romance code because I keep breaking the rules. Does anyone have a copy?
Sometimes I think I straddle that fence between MM romance and gay fiction. Of course I like my couples to have a Happy Ever After, but more like it’s a Happy For Now, with a possibility of an HEA, once I’ve wrung all the angst I can out of them.
Except for The Night Porter… but moving on swiftly.
I do write more fluff pieces. The Isle series, for instance, and Hairy Harry. I only make you cry in the first chapters. Aren’t I kind?
I break the rules again in Stolen Dreams. I’m sorry. I know I’m a bad, bad author. I promise to make it better next time. Oh, that’s The Next Call. Maybe not.

“Later, Jase,” Morgan mumbled. “Tired now.”
“Sparky, wake up.”
Grumpy from the elbow to the ribs, Morgan tried to snuggle back into sleep.
“Morgan.”
A low masculine voice Morgan would have been able to pick out in a football stadium full of screaming fans repeated his name. Morgan’s stomach rolled slowly as he opened his eyes.
Blinking a couple of times, Morgan stared at the couple standing in front of him. The woman had an amused smile curving her lips. Shae’s wife was stunning: a petite brunette wearing impossibly high heels, and currently hanging on to the arm of the man Morgan hadn’t laid eyes on in five years. For the first time since Shae had walked out, Morgan looked into Shae’s huge eyes. Shae looked amazing in a pale blue sweater and black jeans. A little older than the last time Morgan had seen him, but still amazing. He took a closer look and saw the dark circles etched around Shae’s eyes and the weariness that lined his face.
“Shae.”
Jase moved his legs, allowing Morgan to stand and hold out his right hand.
Shae looked at the hand as if it might bite, but at a nudge from his wife, Shae shook it. Morgan resisted the urge to hold on and never let go.
About Sue Brown: Sue Brown is owned by her dog and two children. When she isn’t following their orders, she can be found plotting at her laptop. In fact she hides so she can plot and has gotten expert at ignoring the orders.

I think it’s fine to have unsympathetic characters as long as they have some redeeming quality. Reading about total asshats who have nothing likable at all about them, makes it an unreadable story for me. However, seeing bad boys be redeemed (or at least, not as crappy as they were) and getting a happy ending can be a good read. So I don’t think you have to apologize for your stories, if people care about them, they’ll read them, and if not they can just bugger off.
Thank you for the excerpt.It sounds like a interesting read and a bit like a realistic situation that befalls some. It’ll be interesting to see how you show the aspects of both Shae and Morgan and how Morgan will be “redeemed”
