Ripped from Reality – Boston Boyfriends

MC1Every author has been asked, “How did you come up with that story?” Well, Boston Boyfriends is dedicated to two men I adored, and the characters and story are loosely related to Robert and Paul’s life together.

Robert (left) and Paul met for the first time at a wedding in Las Vegas. Paul lived on the East Coast, and Robert crossed the Pond for the visit. They had an amazing time in Vegas and sparks really flew for Paul. Robert returned to England afterward – liking Paul a lot but not wanting to go too fast since he lived thousands of miles away and had just ended a long-term relationship.

Their relationship was tumultuous, mostly because Paul knew exactly what he wanted and Robert wasn’t very quick to be “all in.” Skype became a regular part of their very long distance relationship. I recall Paul gushing over how sexy Robert was and how crazy he was about him, while Robert was more reserved – shy about his feelings for Paul.

Did I mention we were yacking it up in a private Facebook group? Oh yeah. No holds barred in there. It’s no wonder Robert was scared shitless of the rest of us.

MC2Anyway, Paul made a trip to England for a visit. They had a spectacular time. Paul did his best to drag Robert to every cultural opportunity possible. Robert tried to teach Paul the beauty of a decent, home cooked meal and evenings at the pub with his friends. Both whined and complained about the latest adventure they were being dragged to, but we all knew how much fun they were having together and that they were falling in love.

Eventually Robert invited Paul to move to England and live together. And he agreed. We watched their romance turn into a tremendous commitment and love via Facebook chats and private messages. How unique and wonderful those months were. I’ll always cherish them as a gift.

So, how does Boston Boyfriends parallel? Porter (the teacher) meets Stiegen (the voice over actor) at a posh, celebrity wedding. They are instantly attracted to each other and wind up in bed that night. Neither lives in Miami and after their night together, Porter is pretty hooked on Stiegen. But Stiegen has big plans for his career and a serious romance isn’t part of his plan.

An accidental meeting in Boston reinforces that attraction for both men, but Stiegen is still resisting his emotions. That pisses off Porter in a big way. He doesn’t care about what Stiegen has or his celebrity status. He only cares about Stiegen the man.

A big event in Stiegen’s life brings the two men together and puts Porter in a position to give Stiegen emotional strength when he needs it most. Stiegen’s resistance melts away. Life is too short to spend it only in recording studios, making money with people who don’t care about him. A romantic, erotic New Year’s weekend celebration together cements their relationship. Though not perfect, these two men, like Robert and Paul, decided together is better than apart – no matter what.

The characters are flawed just like the real men are. The best part, however, is that they got their happily ever after.

I hope you’ll enjoy reading Boston Boyfriends. I’m giving away a copy to one pithy commenter. Speak from the heart about a relationship that inspired you and you could be the winner.

Unfortunately for Porter, Stiegen’s career as a voice over actor is skyrocketing, and a serious relationship isn’t in his plans. Their hours together in Miami were more than a booty call for Porter, but what can he do?

Stiegen finds solace in Porter’s arms when his best friend nearly dies. Then, he organizes an unforgettable weekend of passion with Porter back in Boston. His feelings deepen. Saying good-bye to Porter gets harder every time, leaving him wondering whether his career can remain the center of his universe.

Because Porter’s in it for love and won’t settle for less.

  1. Margie is a new to me author as well. Thanks for the great post and insight into the inspiration for the book and the giveaway. My in-laws are an inspiration, they’ve made it through so many challenges and troubles over their 45+ year marriage.

    1. Hi Jen – congrats to your in-laws and best wishes for decades more happiness. It’s pretty terrific to have that kind of a role model in your life when relationships seem so disposable these days. I hope you’ll check out my work and good luck in the contest.

  3. Love the real-life story. All the best to Robert and Paul! Their story reminded me so much of my friend’s, not the long-distance relationship, but the tumultuousness. My friend and her husband come from totally different religious and ethnic backgrounds. Their families were adamantly opposed to their relationship and some didn’t even come to the wedding. Through it all they have persevered. Seeing them together, I know that love really can conquer all. Thanks for the chance to win.

    1. Your friends didn’t have it easy. It sure is hard to choose what is right for you in the face of some much negativity. I hope your friends have a long, happy life together and that their families mend fences. Good luck, Waxapplelover – and don’t be a stranger.

  4. My inspirations are my mum and dad as well as my aunt and uncle….they married 51 years ago (on the same day, different churches) and both couples are still going strong today! Mum and my aunt are sisters. Even though both families found it necessary to move from the small town they grew up in, they independently settled in a new area and found themselves to be living less than 1/2 an hour from each other.
Their parents also had to move around the same time, and you guessed it…they also ended up in the same area.
None of them had perfect lives but they’ve all stuck it out through thick and thin.

    1. And I bet there were many, many times they wanted to throw in the towel. Many sure don’t get the idea of the covenant of marriage when we say I do…and I’m glad you have strong examples in your life of what that means. Thanks, Lee.

  6. This sound like a very good read. I love the blurb and the cover is very nice too :)

The relationship that inspired me is the one my children have with one and other. I have 3 children and my oldes son is multipe disabled. I love the way my other children accept their older brother just the way he is, especially his sister (she is the middle child).

    1. Angela – it sounds like you’re raising a wonderful family and your children will grow to inspire others. A parent can’t ask for more. Best wishes in the future and good luck on the contest.

  7. My parents are my inspiration. This year is 40 years for them. They have shared great stories like my dad driving an hour to pick my mom up from college every weekend and then driving her the hour back two days later.

    1. Jilian – I think it’s so sweet to learn how our parents met and fell in love. My father once took my mom for a ride. She had her eyes closed while listening to classical music…and when she opened them, they were parked with the car headlights shining on my grandmother’s grave. My father said he brought my mom to meet her. OY!!!!!
