TNA: Hi, Patricia, welcome to The Novel Approach. I’m so glad to be hosting you today.
Let’s talk a little bit about BDSM and what makes it such an important part of your writing. What aresome of the most significant parts of the D/s relationship you strive to portray to your readers?
Patricia: That it is not an abusive relationship but a very loving one. It is one of those relationships that make for a very strong story by exposing the vulnerability of the Dom and the submissive. Everyone thinks it is the submissive who must be portrayed as the weaker of the two but in reality, he must be the stronger. It isn’t easy to allow yourself to open up to another person and give up control to them and that’s what gives the submissive power in the dynamic.
TNA: Have you ever read a book in which you felt a D/s relationship was portrayed unrealistically? What made it so unrelatable for you?
Patricia: Definitely. I’ve read a lot of them. The plot that bugs me the most is when the submissive will allow his Dom to take him into the playroom and beat him nearly senseless before the Dom finally gives up. In any real life BDSM relationship, the Doms/Dommes and submissives will tell you that it is the responsibility of the sub to use his/her safeword long before it ever gets to that point. The safeword is a tool which is important to use just as any of the Dom’s toys are there to bring the couple pleasure along with the pain they both need. BDSM is more than a sexual corporal punishment scenario. It is a journey that the couple travels together to achieve the perfect outcome/satisfaction for them both. This extends outside the playroom to their lives and if that isn’t taken into account in a book, then the book has no plot for me nor does it even approach reality for BDSM’ers. It’s just painful sex scenes and I’ve seen that done too many times to count. I hate it.
TNA: What’s the best compliment on one of your books (or couples) you’ve ever received from a reader?
Patricia: That they can’t live without the couple… that they want to see them more. That extends beyond sex scenes (so prevalent in BDSM books and another pet peeve of mine) and I try to give a reader more than a glimpse into the couple’s playroom. I strive to show how they live their lives as very real people who enjoy BDSM in all aspects of their lives, most especially the symbiotic relationship outside the playroom. You know the old saying, “It takes two to Tango”. Well, that’s what I strive to portray and I think my readers understand that and want more.
TNA: If a reader who’s never read one of your books before asked you to recommend your favorite to them, which book would you choose, and why would you choose that particular book as a good starting point for them?
Patricia: It depends on what they are into. If BDSM is their thing, then I’d say “Silver Ties” hands down. It can be read as a standalone but if they enjoy Cassidy and Zack, they can be found in a lot of other books, including the Master’s Boys series. If they are looking for a vanilla book, I like my newest release “The Thief” or the first of my Assassins series, “Verified Kill”. Both are standalones and both have really good and fun stories that should keep the reader entertained along with their smokin hot manlove which is present in all my books.
TNA: Would you like to share a little bit about your current WIPs and upcoming releases with us?
Patricia: Today, I am releasing the audio book for “Silver Ties”. It’s my first audio book and I think the narrator/actor did an amazing job of capturing the essence of the thrilling nature of the book and the main characters. He also did a great job with the secondary characters and made them awesome.
Secondly, I have just released “The Thief”. It is a contemporary MM thriller (can you tell I like thrillers?) which deals with an art thief who steals artwork which was originally confiscated by the Nazis during WWII. It has an underlying message which is very strong and my bodyguard, Ranger, is probably the funniest character I’ve ever written. I actually laughed out loud as I was writing some of the scenes. In contrast, I also cried several times, and that’s never happened to me while writing a book.
TNA: Thanks, Patricia!
Patricia: Thank you so much for having me. :)
Blurb: A serial killer is preying upon gay men in Los Angeles. Detective Cassidy Ryan of the LAPD is out to stop the monster before more mutilated corpses turn up. The victims have one thing in common and it leads back to an infamous online club called DOMZ.com. The website owner, Zachary Teak, is stunningly gorgeous and infuriatingly uncooperative. Having spent years in vice, investigating crimes fueled by pornography, Cassidy hates the Dom on sight.
Zack Teak is a wealthy man and a popular Dom with a long waiting list of subs who beg to lick his boots. The moment he meets the detective, a former Navy SEAL, he is determined to help the handsome, blond hunk explore his own submissive nature but Cassidy is having none of it.
As Cassidy closes in on the killer, he succumbs to Teak’s charms, finding that it’s okay to give up control and let Zack take charge. Join the men as they flush out a killer while trying not to become victims themselves.
