Review: When I started this book, I was a little thrown off by Ben directly addressing me, the reader, but as the story went on I found that I liked it, and it made me feel more involved with the story. And Ben was right, most of the time: when he was addressing me through the first half of the book, I wanted to knock some sense into him. Alright…I did feel a little bad for the poor guy; the ones I really wanted to knock some sense into were his parents!
Micah, on the other hand, was awesome right from the start…loved him! He was strong and confident and wasn’t going to put up with the hot and cold and back and forth with Ben. The two of them together were just adorable, almost sickly sweet (but I like that kind of thing). The banter back and forth between all of the characters was great and had me laughing. Micah’s parents, especially his mom, were hilarious!
So, my issue with the book, and the reason it wasn’t a 5 star read for me, is that the second half seemed really rushed. The first half of the book is spent dealing with Ben’s struggle with being (or not wanting to be) gay. Then, as soon as he accepts himself and being with Micah, time just speeds up; not that I didn’t enjoy seeing how their lives ended up playing out, and them getting their HEA, but it was a little too much of a whirlwind to me.
I’m a little OCD about reading books in a series in order and hadn’t read any of the other books in this collection. Although Just What the Truth Is is a standalone, as other couples were introduced I kept feeling as though I was missing something, which is completely my crazy issue, but now I’m going to go get the rest of the series so I can meet all the other guys!
