Quirky people make life interesting. They aren’t always the easiest people to know but I truly believe they’re the ones who make a difference. I have a little experience with quirky personalities. Okay fine… I have a lot. In my family, quirk is the norm. My people are the type who can recite memorable movie scenes on command. Their talents aren’t confined to any particular genre or generation. Just the other night, for example, my husband and sixteen year old daughter did an impromptu Judy Garland/Barbra Streisand duet of “Happy Days”. They fought briefly over who got to sing which part, but once they’d agreed, it was flawless. And hysterical. Who else has to ask Judy and Barbra to keep down in order to get any work done? They’re blessed with fantastic comedic timing or at least the panache to fake it with flair if their audience doesn’t follow along.

Every family trip has been immortalized in at least one goofball song or memorable moment. Like skipping through Central Park or singing Frank Sinatra songs while trudging up a steep slope in San Francisco. Most of the time these memories are the type that are really difficult to explain because let’s face it, the retelling of said stories makes us sound… weird. But I don’t care. I’ve discovered over the years that it is ultimately much more fulfilling to embrace quirkiness than to sit around scratching your head wondering why people can’t just act “normal”.

In Better Than Safe, Seth is the ultimate oddball. He is a quandary Paul doesn’t understand. He never looks the same twice. One day he’s dressed in haute couture, the next he looks like a punk ass college kid. He’s flighty, whimsical and can never seem to arrive anywhere in a timely manner. For a serious minded advertisement executive like Paul, Seth is a bad bet. Hanging out with an adventurous artist with a nimble mind might be fun for an afternoon, not for life. But there’s something compelling about Seth and Paul can’t seem to stay away. For the first time in a while, he begins to wonder if Seth might be a chance worth taking. Sure, he’s a little a crazy sometimes but maybe he’s better than safe.

Personally, I love funny oddballs. I know many… well. I’ve learned to laugh at what used to confuse me. Now when my son dresses in a velvet jacket with tennis shorts on a warm summer day, I smile. I’d rather surround myself with people who think for themselves and redefine their world creatively than with those who are afraid to color outside the lines. It can be a little scary on the other side, but it’s a helluva lot more fun!
