The praeternatural world that Lowell Kanaan and John Tilney inhabit is, to put it bluntly, complicated. With maybe a hundred possible superhuman abilities divided into five different, occasionally arguing ‘factions’, things are already messy. Keeping it on the downlow from the mundane world–our world–makes things even more complex.
Which is, of course, one of the most fun things about writing Kanaan & Tilney. They’re both praeternaturals, but Lowell Kanaan is a shifter–wolf, specifically–and John Tilney is a pyrokinetic. That puts them in the Beast and Elementalist factions, respectively… and those factions do not get along so well, historically. As in they kind of blame each other for some of the major praeternatural-caused disasters in history.
Beasts aren’t quite the bottom of the social hierarchy, but they’re close, according to many of the other factions. At their finest, they’re ideal protectors and loyal friends; at their worst, they can lose what makes them human to what makes them, well, animal. Think Bigfoot. Yeah, that Bigfoot. Personally, we (the authors) tend to think they’re the best, but the other praeternatural factions often associate them with brutishness, citing their animal abilities and instincts.
Soooo not true.
Elementalists like to think they’re the mirror opposite, but they’re totally not. They control various elements, throwing stone or lightning, which means they get a bit uppity about being ‘higher’ magic, sometimes. Problem there is, there’s a lot of chaos going around in the elements, and imposing order on them can get to be a little much–as in do your head in. So who’s giving way to baser instincts now, huh? As in, you know, sinking Atlantis and burning down the Library of Alexandria?
Yeah, that’s what we thought.
So, as you can imagine, we had a lot of fun with both the powers within our five factions, plus the weird politics, history, and cultural for them all. And that’s not even getting into the Terrans, Necromorphs, and Psychogenics, because we’ll be here all day–and seeing as it’s release day, prrrrobably not a great idea. But the point is, we love worldbuilding, and the worldbuilding for Kanaan & Tilney? So much fun, there’s gonna be more of them, that’s for sure.
BLURB for Kanaan & Tilney: The Case of the Arms Dealers: John Tilney–praeternatural pyrokinetic and mystery author–has noticed the bottom dropping out of the market for his usual gothic fare, so he goes to Lowell Kanaan, PI, for a crash course in noir. Lowell, the cranky wolf-shifter detective, isn’t sure why he agrees to let John shadow him–though it might have something to do with John’s weirdly endearing honesty… and pretty lips. John thinks he’s found the perfect detective novel hero in Lowell, but it isn’t long before he realizes he doesn’t want Lowell for his book, but for himself.
As they become entangled in a supernatural whodunnit involving the Zombie Mafia, black market body parts, and shady insurance deals, their partnership grows closer–and hotter. But when it comes down to the wire, Lowell’s wolfy protective side threatens to drive John around the bend, or at least out of the office. Good thing John’s as much sunshine as he is fire; hopefully it’s enough to help them catch a murderer before they end up in literal pieces, too.
