Guest Post and Giveaway: Some Assembly Required by Lex Chase and Bru Baker

Hello, everyone! I’m Lex Chase here to kick off a fabulous release day for Some Assembly Required with you guys. I co-wrote Some Assembly Required with Bru Baker, where in a stroke of madness wrote a meet-cute about two dead guys meeting in the afterlife wandering CASA, an affordable minimalist home furnishings store, also known as purgatory. You never knew you needed this book in your life.

In kicking things off, how about we set the mood? I’ve visited TNA before with my love of playlists. I always have music going when I write. In the case of co-writing, Bru and I put our heads together for a playlist that we felt signified the feel of Some Assembly Required the best.

We like to call this list Peppy with FEEEELS. Because that’s basically what this book is. Trust me, once you get past the “Wait, the’re haunting THAT store?” the book is so full of epic feels.

When writing the book, both of us listened to a lot of mainstream pop. I was also listening to a lot of classic rock and pretty much had the Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Mix on constant loop.

One of the songs that inspired my feel for Patrick was “Come And Get Your Love” which was used in the opening credits of Guardians as Chris Pratt danced about in a cave with zero fucks given. Which in turn led Patrick to be based on Chris Pratt entirely. Because. Amirite? Not only is said scene included in the playlist as a bonus, but I’ve also added it down below so you can marvel at the hilarity.

So, I know you guys have some super embarrassing songs you like but would never admit to under penalty of death. Why don’t you tell us? We’re all friends here. I gotta say, I have a thing for Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space.”

Tell us and don’t forget to record your entry on the giveaway widget!

Blurb: Everyone wishes they were dead when wandering the purgatory of a home furnishings store, but these guys actually are.

Benji Goss is the quintessential good guy. When his boyfriend dumps him and moves out, Benji obligingly keeps the cat even though he s allergic because his ex s new place doesn t accept pets. He s always joked the cat would be the death of him, but not in a way he expects when a feline mishap crushes him under a DEL TORO bookcase.

Snarky loner Patrick Bryant is in such a rut he barely remembers the life he used to lead. The last thing he recalls is being decapitated by a DEL TORO bookcase in a freak accident. As a spiritual CASA resident, he haunts the aisles of affordable Italian furniture, assisting fellow spirits in moving on to their final destinations.

When Benji appears in the CASA cafi, Patrick considers the naove spirit just the man to cure his boredom. Benji s relentless optimism chips away at Patrick s sarcasm, making him question if there s something beyond what he can see. But the heart is like CASA furniture there s always some assembly required.

Lex ChaseAbout the Authors:

Lex Chase once heard Stephen King say in a commercial, We re all going to die, I m just trying to make it a little more interesting. Now she s on a mission to make the world a hell of a lot more interesting.

Weaving tales of sweeping cinematic adventure depending on how she feels that day Lex sprinkles in high-speed chases, shower scenes, and more explosions than a Hollywood blockbuster. Her pride is in telling stories of men who kiss as much as they kick ass. If you re going to march into the depths of hell, it better be beside the one you love.

Lex is a pop culture diva, her DVR is constantly backlogged, and she unapologetically loved the ending of Lost. She wouldn t last five minutes without technology in the event of the apocalypse and has nightmares about refusing to leave her cats behind.

cropped headshot Bru BakerBru Baker got her first taste of life as a writer at the tender age of four when she started publishing a weekly newspaper for her family. What they called nosiness she called a nose for news, and no one was surprised when she ended up with degrees in journalism and political science and started a career in journalism.

Bru spent fifteen years writing for newspapers before making the jump to fiction. She now works in reference and readers’ advisory in a Midwestern library, though she still finds it hard to believe someone’s willing to pay her to talk about books all day. Most evenings you can find her curled up with a mug of tea, some fuzzy socks, and a book or her laptop. Whether it s creating her own characters or getting caught up in someone else s, there s no denying that Bru is happiest when she s engrossed in a story. She and her husband have two children, which means a lot of her books get written from the sidelines of various sports practices.

    1. Thanks Debra! I hope you enjoy it as much as we had a good time writing it. :D Do you have a song you’d never admit you secretly love? I’m telling you, that Taylor Swift secretly has my heart.

    1. Omg. I totally have a thing for Call Me Maybe too. Like…I feel so ashamed. But it’s so happy. There’s totally a Nine Inch Nails/Carly Rae Jepsen mashup that’s a freaking riot. It almost made the playlist. Check it out here!

But is that Guardians clip hilarious? It it literally the first five minutes of the movie. I knew then it would be my favorite. LOL

  2. I can’t hear Come And Get Your Love without thinking about the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy. I loved it. I guess I could say that Madonna – 4 Minutes (To Save The World) ft. Justin Timberlake is a one for me. I really have no love for Justin Timberlake, but a couple of his songs with Timbaland work for me.

    1. Am I right, Jen? I listen to Awesome Mix waaaaayyyy too much. I’m pretty pumped to hear Awesome Mix Vol. 2 when the sequel comes out.

Not gunna lie, I’m pretty fond of Incomplete by Backstreet Boys. IDEK. I never got into the whole Backstreet Boys/NSync/98 Degrees Boy Band thing. True story, I never liked New Kids. Let me tell you, being in 5th grade and hating the New Kids got you a LOT of friends (read: none) LOL

  3. Congratulations on your new release Lex and Bru. One of my favourite silly songs is “The Laughing Gnome” by David Bowie it’s so different from any of his other work. Now you’ve got me singing it!

    1. Thanks Shirley! Personally, I think any song by David Bowie is ALWAYS an awesome one, even if some of them are personally hit and miss with me. Man, I can’t believe we lost such a legend. GAH. But he left such an enduring legacy. :D

  4. Thanks for the post! One of my favorite songs that I also find kind of embarrassing is Dice by Finley Quaye. It is great to exercise to.

    1. Anything with a beat is always fun to exercise to no matter the beat. I love the crap out of One Night In Bangkok by Murray Head. That beat! And the lyrics are so sleazy. “I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine!”

  5. Favorite but embarrassing? That’s hard. Not many songs embarrass me. My favorite song right now is Love Hate Love by Alice in Chains.

    1. high five! Hell yeah Alice in Chains, Adam! I’m having an Angry Music Day today. And I’ve got Lacuna Coil, VnV Nation, Assemblage 23, and Covenant going waaaaay too loud but it’s only good loud where you can feel DAT BASS.

  6. I absolutely love Fall Out Boy and everyone knows it but I feel embarrassed about it because they have a reputation of being an emo band and I’m not into that scene at all .

    1. Hahaha! I have a professor that’s the mother of triplets and she’s a “Good Christian Woman” but looooooves Fall Out Boy. It’s hilarious. My music collection is a mix of everything. I have quite a bit of emo songs! Even though as an adult I’m like gigglesnort “Oh emo…” In high school I was totally the goth kid. Nine Inch Nails all the way! WOO!

  7. I was going to say that I couldn’t remember any but I just remembered a song named Cheerleader. As much as I hated it, the tune was pretty catchy.
