5 Things That Make Me a Better Writer
- A strong, compulsive work ethic — What may be my biggest asset as a writer, which has allowed me to be prolific but also drives me batty, is my inner drive to tackle ideas, find the time to write, and finish projects no matter what. My day job and my kids take up a huge portion of my time, but my writing means something to me that no other aspect of my life is able to touch. As a designer, I produce things that are consumed and quickly forgotten, over and over again. There is no lasting impact, everything is always in flux. As a mom, I’m shaping people so that they can be independent little humans in only a few short years. I’ll set them out on their quests to tackle their own dreams. In the meantime, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep writing books and breathe life into the worlds vibrantly active in my imagination. Writing is my way to leave my mark, but it won’t happen without the willingness to furiously type a few hundred words before work, after work, sometimes even during work, late at night after the kids are in bed or while they’re running around swinging light sabers at each other. Am I sacrificing buckets of time I could be spending doing other things, like cleaning the house, playing Legos with my kids, going out to meet with friends, or so many other things? Absolutely. It’s a balancing act of shifting priorities that’s always influenced by the knowledge that we’re not guaranteed anything besides this very moment. So do I spend it shaping worlds, making magic and creating characters I love just as much as actual people? Something inside me keeps pushing me to keep going, keep writing, and it’s a voice I can’t help but listen to.
- Sensitivity — I’ve always been a highly emotional person. I find myself investing too deeply in people, moments, promises and ideas that, more often than not, don’t come through the way I’d like. In most aspects of daily living, this is a weakness, repeatedly setting me up for heartbreak and disappointment, but in writing, being too invested in what I’m crafting is only a blessing. The more real I can make my characters, the more I love them, or hate them, and the more stunningly flawed they are, the better off their stories will be. Where in other situations, that feeling of, “this moment, this possibility right here is everything to me,” is dangerous, maybe even foolish. As a writer? It only makes me better.
- Reading — It has already been said countless times, but in addition to simply reading in general, I think it’s important to read in many genres and on topics as varied as you can possibly manage to find. It’s excellent for research purposes, but also helps spark ideas and feed the muse. I read biographies, horror, science fiction, fantasy, humor, historical, weird fiction, non-fiction, erotica featuring every pairing you can imagine, not just male/male, and anything else intriguing I happen upon. As a reader, consume diversely; your imagination will thank you.
- Outside the box thinking — Who wants to read a boring book? I’ve written about a lot of taboo topics, like twin incest, prostitution, homelessness, various forms of abuse and brainwashing, basic survival in deadly situations, hardcore BDSM, crises of identity at the most basic level and things that seemed at first to be intimidating or beyond the realm of what is expected in traditional romantic fiction. That’s because as a reader, I like to dig into the most bizarre stories out there. I expect the same instinct to be lurking in other readers, too. Stories should be challenging, confronting us with situations in which we’d never hope to find ourselves. It’s by living vicariously, safely through the characters in books that we can best learn, grow and discover more about who we are, as well as people existing in this beautifully complicated world all around us.
- Providing a spectrum of dark to light — More than anything, I want my readers to feel. I want them to laugh, cry, be afraid, furious and fall hopelessly in love all in the same story. I want them turned on, bracing themselves for the danger lurking just around the corner, and laughing their asses off all at the same time. My stories tend to go dark – really dark – but humor is just as essential as any shock factor or steamy love scene. Each of my books is a self-enclosed little journey, designed to challenge sensibilities and rife with temptation to enjoy something deliciously unexpected; I wouldn’t have it any other way.
