Review: Jenn Burke and Kelly Jensen did it again. I don’t know how they manage to work together to create such seamless books, but the third installment in the Chaos Station series is just that. Seamless. Not only does it follow events from the first two books with no continuity errors, but I cannot tell that two different authors are writing. While the characters all have distinct voices, they are consistent throughout the books, and it seems as if one person has written them all.
Before you continuing reading, I must say it is necessary to read this series in order. You’d be missing out on a lot, especially in book two. That book absolutely broke my heart and then patched it back together.
Zander is back after what should have been a death sentence, and no one is happier than Felix. There’s just one problem: Zander’s family. While Felix likes them, he doesn’t feel like he fits in with them. They’re rich, connected, and powerful. Felix, on the other hand, is a broken former soldier with the scars to prove it. When a mission comes up to save one of Zander’s former teammates, Felix finds himself going along. Without Zander. What happens next leaves both men reeling and Felix wondering if he can survive losing Zander again.
I absolutely adore Zed and Flick. Truly. Of all the characters I’ve read recently, they never fail to make me swoon and fall in love with them every time I read their stories. They break my heart most of the time, too, but that just goes with the territory of loving these former soldiers.
The plot of this book furthers what happens in book two, concerning the Guardians. The AEF thinks Zander has leaked information about Project Dreamweaver and is busy trying to keep them off his back while collecting—and trying to help—his former teammates, who are suffering as he did. It’s not easy, though. There’s the cartel they have to avoid, reporters, the AEF, and of course, the stin. And while they do this, there’s more of Flick’s struggle with his past and his present colliding. He knows what he wants, but he doesn’t think he’s good enough for it. He’s already lost Zed once—twice, really—and he doesn’t know what a third time will do to him, so rather than wait for it to happen, he leaves. Of course, that isn’t going to go as well as he planned, but how will Zed react to this while he deals with everything else?
Sadly, Qek was not around as much as in the previous books. I wish she’d had more page time because I absolutely love the little ashie. Marnie and Ryan do finally make appearances, though, and I look forward to getting to know them more. Especially Ryan. Something about him just intrigues me.
Skip Trace leaves off preparing readers for book four, Inversion Point, which I will begin reading right away. There’s the potential for a new alien species contact, the Guardians’ reappearance, and who knows what else! All I know is with Jenn Burke and Kelly Jensen at the helm, I’m in for a great ride.
