Lisa: Hi, Moriah, we’re so pleased to welcome you to The Novel Approach today. Why don’t we start by having you tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.
Moriah: Thank you for having me. I’m an author at night and a stay-at-home mom during the day, and I’ve been writing since the age of seven. My current book is called Céilí, and it’s about a man who finds where he belongs after a lifetime of searching, and how he comes to protect that life at all costs.
Lisa: Would you like to be a full-time writer?
Moriah: Absolutely. That’s the dream, isn’t it? To live life free of drudgery and just live on the words, live for the words. That’s what I’d love to do. We’ll see if I ever get there.
Lisa: Now, tell us a little bit about the characters in your book. What would you say makes them unique?
Moriah: Devon is unique for a few reasons, the main of which is that he takes medication daily. Most of the time, main characters don’t get shown doing things like that—it’s not very romantic. But I decided to sacrifice the romance of it to show reality instead. He’s also making his way through depression and isn’t necessarily a very likable guy sometimes because of it. He’s kind of surly and deadpan. But I still like him very much, and I think readers will too.
Eldan, on the other hand, is a wild guy. He’s very whimsical and likes to joke and experience the pleasures of life. He’s a leader but he’s not above anyone. He has immense power and is very practical about it—it exists, it’s not going to his head, but he’s not going to deny it either. He’s an interesting guy.
Lisa: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in getting your book from start to publish?
Moriah: Editing is hard. Seriously, a really great editor will rip your book to shreds before showing you how to put it back together. It’s very much an ego destroyer. But it makes the book so much better and it’s worth it in the end.
Lisa: Have you ever gone to an author/reader/fan convention? If so, how was it? If not, do you think it’s something you’d like to do in the future?
Moriah: I have been to a very, very small convention, yes. I live in a very remote part of New York State, in the Central area, and we’re very removed from the world in so many ways; it’s an odd place to live. But conventions don’t really happen up here. Only one that I know of, it happened at a local college, and it was a geek convention for comic books and sci fi/fantasy fans. I got a couple great comic books there, and I got to take a picture with a TARDIS replica, and there were a bunch of little fun things, but it was in a small gym and it only took up about half of that gym. Very small, very remote. I’d love to go to something big, though. I’m actually attending RT Convention this year, so you can see me there!
Lisa: Okay, let’s close on something a little silly: design the ultimate pizza.
Moriah: I love a good chicken wing pizza. With nice chunks of chicken dipped in a rich wing sauce, drizzled with it, with the cheese all melty and delicious. And I’m from New York, even upstate we know good pizza. It has to be big with a good crust—if you’ve ever had NY pizza you know what I’m talking about.
Lisa: Thanks so much for stopping by today, Moriah. It’s been a pleasure.

Blurb: The Los Angeles music scene has not been kind to Devon Caelin. He struggles to fit in and has a streak of bad luck the length of the Sunset Strip. One rare rainy night, he drowns his sorrows from bar-to-bar, until he stumbles into an alley club called Céilí. He discovers that it’s home to a small community of mystical people making their way in the human world, and that he found it only because he is Fae himself. With mentoring from the pub’s proprietor, Eldan—a powerful Fae Lord protecting his kind in the city—Devon unearths his past and discovers his magical abilities. His life appears to be back on track—until a member of the Faerie Court is murdered and the secret of their world is threatened to be revealed.
