Coming soon on the Foodie Network…Personal Chef: Rock Star, a competition where six chefs are in contention to spend a year as personal chef to Tully Randolph, drummer for the break out indie band Unusual Potatoes.
Interviewer: First up on Meet the Chefs, we’re talking to Wyatt Parker, home chef, and it says here, owner of a construction company. That’s quite a jump from construction to cooking. So first thing’s first. Where are you from and what made you decide to compete?
Wyatt Parker: Well, I’m from a little city in Texas, and cooking’s something I’ve been doing since I was a teenager. Never occurred to me there was that much difference between working construction–where I’m sweating out in the heat and laboring over sometimes really small details–and cooking, which is more of the same. Guess what really pushed me to compete was knowing I’d get to meet Tully. He’s my favorite musician, and the Potatoes are my favorite band. Might be a surprise, coming from and older guy like me, since the Potatoes are pretty youthful and hip, but I like what I like. I apply that same principle to cooking.
INT: Most teenagers aren’t that interested in cooking these days. Those that are usually either go to culinary school or start working on the line. Is cooking something you’re passionate about? What made you cook at that age and why didn’t you pursue it?
WP: I’m passionate about food, and cooking’s part of that. Cooking’s a way to express myself that maybe the rest of my life doesn’t afford me. When I was a teenager, I started cooking to show my love to a very dear person in my life, someone who needed to be fattened up and looked after. But it was never a question that I’d go into construction. That was the family business, and I was following in important footsteps.
INT: I see. Some of your competitors are coming in with culinary educations and years of experience working for well-known chefs. They’ve accrued influences from around the world and refined their palates. What influences do you draw from in your cooking? What do you think will make you stand out?
WP: Good food is good food. While I definitely eat out when I can, try to expand my repertoire of tastes and flavor profiles, I know I’m not on the level of someone who’s devoted their life to figuring out the perfect way to marry unusual flavors. I read a lot of cooking mags, watch the Foodie Network, buy cookbooks… but ultimately, I go with my gut. I cook what tastes good to me. I make comforting, full-flavored, unrepentantly home-cooked meals. Reckon that’ll make me stand out all on its own.
INT: Sounds like a plan. So a couple of fun ones so people can get to know you. First, give us a couple of fun facts about you, things people wouldn’t expect.
Second, what is your personal motto?
WP: Wow, uh. Fun facts about me? I guess something people wouldn’t expect to look at me, big old construction worker from Texas… I’m gay. Out and proud, never had too much trouble despite where I’m from. Folks might say “bless your heart” a little more often to me than to others, but I’m doing all right. And I’m really into indie music. People always peg me for country, but as I told y’all, I’m huge fan of Tully and the Potatoes. They’re my kind of music. As for my personal motto… Maybe I’d say it’s, “Put into it what you want to get out of it,” whether that’s life or a cake or a relationship.
INT: Good luck to you, Wyatt. Thanks for joining us. Personal Chef: Rock Star begins filming this week for the Foodie Network. Six contestants vie for a spot as Tully Randolph’s personal chef, living on-site, in the pressure cooker of intense competition 24/7. Who will win over our judges and claim the top prize? Tune in to find out.
About the Book
Wyatt Parker has a good life—he owns his own construction company, his own house, and he eats home-cooked meals every day. But cooking for one while watching the foodie network is more than lonely. With a heart as big as he is, Wyatt wows Tully with his skills in the kitchen… and in the bedroom.
But if their relationship is found out, Wyatt could be drummed out of the competition—and out of Tully’s life. All the ingredients for a happy future are in front of them, and they just need to figure out how to bring everything together.
