A Visit from the First Graders of P.S. 147 (written as a short, one-act play)

Scene: In the front foyer of the AURA law enforcement’s squad room.

At Rise: A group of small children mill about at the doors while their teacher, Mr. Tremain, strives to keep order. The doors open to reveal a majestic centaur, Sergeant Nestor (Ness), in a police sergeant’s uniform shirt. The rest if the uniform is absent since centaurs don’t wear pants.

Ness (holds out a hand in greeting): Good morning! You must be Mr. Tremain. I’m Sergeant Nestor, the duty sergeant on this morning. I understand we have some students eager to see the squad room.

Mr. Tremain (shaking hands in a wooden fashion): Well, er, yes. That is, we had a human guide last time. Isn’t there someone…?

Ness: More human? I’m sorry, Mr. Tremain. School tours are part of the job description as duty sergeant, and I’m afraid all of our human officers are on cases. Is it going to be a problem?

Mr. Tremain: Ah, no. I mean, I’m not a racist or any of that. It’s just…the children.

Child 1: Are you a real centaw?

Ness (smiling): Yes, I truly am.

Child 2: Do you eat hay? Cause you got a horse tummy?

Ness: No, hay isn’t any fun to eat. I eat a lot of vegetables, though.

Child 3: My daddy says there’s no such thing as girl centaurs. Was your mommy a human that a centaur kidnapped? Like in Hercules?

Ness: A student of the classics, I see. Human mommies can’t have centaur babies. They’re too small. So my mommy was a female centaur, just like yours was most likely a female human.

Child 3 (hands on hips): So how come we never seen girl centaurs?

Ness: I’m not certain. There are fewer girl centaurs than boys, so maybe one just hasn’t come through yet.

Child 4: Does that mean you gots to marry another boy centaur? Cause there’s no girls here?

Mr. Tremain: Miranda! We don’t say things like that to the nice police sergeant!

Ness (chuckling): I could marry a boy centaur if I wanted to, but my boyfriend might not like that.

Mr. Tremain (outraged): Sergeant could we please get on with the tour!

Child 5: Can we ride on you?

Ness: Only if I get to ride Mr. Tremain.

The children giggle while Mr. Tremain chokes.

Ness: Come along, kids. We’ll go visit Officer Flax where he’s evaluating new trainees on the magical firing range. He has two boyfriends.
