Why writing Fantasy is so . . . fantastic

Writing fantasy takes me back to my very first attempts at crafting stories. I used to love – LOVE – reading about new worlds with talking trees and magic and evil that has to be overcome by good. One of my first short stories was about the origins of a new world, where the land itself was personified as a character. It was so much fun to write and when I write fantasy now, I’m taken back to that fun-and-games I had as a kid.

Cerdic. Gildwor. Gatreau. Snowvar. King Gallagher. I love the awesome names and places that authors get to come up with in fantasy. They are characters and places that don’t really exist in the real world, and can be named as wished. You can make up histories and backgrounds and forge new societies. It’s so liberating to be the maker and designer of a world!

But the best part of crafting fantasy is the freedom to make shit up. That’s not to say magical abilities don’t have rules and need consistency, but I can have characters turn into dragons or craft magical shields by tapping into the magic of nature-spirits. It’s so liberating to be able to imagine something and make it come to life on the page.

I got to do this a lot with Locked and it made the whole experience of writing so much fun. Well, okay, keeping everything straight and consistent got tricky, but the fact I could have my dragon-warriors turn into gargoyles, or have special symbols that connected Tellurics to the spirits of nature and produce magic was so much fun to write about.

Lastly, there are the characters. Writing fantasy characters is much like writing contemporary characters in that many of their conflicts come from the different relationships they have with their peers/enemies/family, etc. But they also get added external conflicts that work with the magic of that world. So conflict feels fresh and fantastic to write about.

About the Author

Anyta SundayA born and raised New Zealander from Wellington, I’ve been exploring the literary world since I started reading Roald Dahl as a kid. Stories have been piling up in my head ever since. Fast forward to my mid-twenties and jump a few countries (Germany, America, and back again), I started to put them to paper.

My genre of choice is romance, both adult and YA, gay and straight. You can take a closer look at my books, available as e-books for download in many formats!

When I’m not pushing my characters deeper into adventure, I chase my son around the house and fight my two comical cats for the desk chair.

Since 2014, I’m also part of CritShop Literary Services, specializing in writing workshops and editorial services for LGBT fiction.
