Lisa: We’re so pleased to welcome author Carrie Pack to TNA today, on the tour for her new novel from Interlude Press, In the Present Tense.
Welcome, Carrie. Why don’t we start by having you tell us a little bit about your new book?
Carrie: Hi. Thanks for having me! In the Present Tense is my second novel and it’s a sci-fi story about a young man named Miles. He has an unusual dissociative disorder that causes him to time travel. Miles’s journey involves trying to reconnect with a past love and find a cure for his rare condition.
Lisa: In what genres do you write?
Carrie: So far I’ve written in science-fiction and contemporary romance. One day, I’d like to tackle historical, and I’m currently working on a YA romance.
Lisa: Where and when do you prefer to write?
Carrie: I’d prefer to write from my rustic mountain retreat, but since that’s just a pipe dream at this point, I can usually be found on my couch, trying to keep a cat from walking across and/or lounging on my keyboard.
Lisa: What would you say is the best line you’ve ever written?
Carrie: My favorite line from In the Present Tense is, “Ah yes, the problem with personal pronouns and verb tenses. Neither was made for time-traveling teens, were they?”
It’s such a great moment in the book because Bethany is telling Miles she understands what he’s going through—and he really needs a friend in that moment. But, I must confess, it’s also a jab at myself because while I was writing In the Present Tense, there were moments where the timeline was getting difficult to keep straight. I wanted to give up. Then I realized Miles’s timeline isn’t supposed to be an easy thing to sort out, so I wanted to tell the reader they’re not alone. The story is meant to be a little disorienting so the reader can feel what Miles feels.
Lisa: Do you listen to music while writing? If so, what kind?
Carrie: I don’t often listen to music while I write, but if I do it can’t have any words. If I’m listening to music with lyrics, I end up singing along instead of writing. Impromptu dance parties are also a possibility. Even classical music can affect my mood, which can affect my writing. So I try to save the tunes for when I need a break.
Lisa: If In the Present Tense were made into a movie, what actors would you like to see star in it?
Carrie: Well, there are a couple characters I created with particular actors in mind. First is Miles’s therapist, Dr. Eleanor Benson. She is 100% Ellen Barkin. Apart from looking exactly how I pictured her, I think she’d be able to play the good and bad elements of the character perfectly. The other character is Miles’s friend Bethany Carter. I think Kristen Stewart could do her justice, even though I pictured Bethany a bit heavier than Kristen’s ever been. Other actors I’d love to see bring my characters to life are Michael B. Jordan as Miles, Gina Rodriguez as Ana, Harry Shum Jr. as Adam, Isla Fisher as Michaela, and Ian Somerhalder as Anthony.
Lisa: Thanks so much for being with us today. It’s been fun!

Thank you so much for having me on your blog! :)
Welcome, Carrie, it’s my pleasure! :)
I would love to visit my teenage years and introduce myself to my husband earlier, or tell myself not to sweat the small stuff.
I’d go back to when my mum was still alive before her hospitalization and spend some time with her.
