A colleague’s attempt to cheer him up brings Mitch to a secret “club.” Mitch isn’t remotely interested in the twinks parading like peacocks, until he spies the young man at the back of the room, nose firmly in a book and oblivious to his surroundings. Now Mitch is interested.
Nikko Kurokawa wants to pay his debt and get the hell out of the Black Lounge—where he is forced to not only have sex, but sometimes suffer abuse to please clients. Earning his freedom isn’t proving easy, especially when he starts attracting interest. Life becomes that little bit easier to bear when he meets Mitch, who is nothing like the other men who frequent the club. And when Mitch crawls under his skin and into his heart, Nikko figures he can put up with anything. Before long he’ll be out of there, and he and Mitch can figure out if they have a future together.
Neither of them counted on those who don’t want Nikko to leave….
Review: Debt proves once again that author K.C. Wells has tender romance storytelling down to a science. The emotional bonds she creates between her men are not only touching but undeniably well-crafted, leaving no doubt that the love she has built between her characters is deep and long lasting. In this case, she writes a story that takes on a significant age gap, organized crime, and a relationship that would test the bounds of any understanding family, and makes it all work.
Nikko is in a bad situation. Naïve and lost, he thinks he is helping his drug mule brother out of a financial debt to one unsavory brothel/drug dealing owner. What he has actually done is sold his soul and his body down the river with no lifeboat in sight—until Mitch comes on the scene. Still nursing his wounds over a recent breakup, Mitch’s coworker Aaron takes him to an exclusive “club” and introduces him to its best kept secret—a whorehouse with every kind of fantasy available. But it’s not the scantily clad boys that capture his eye; instead, it is the fully clothed bookworm in the corner—the one with the silky long braid and the haunting eyes. Nikko—even his name captivates Mitch.
Before long, Mitch finds himself handing over the $5,000 membership fee and returning again and again to be with the quiet young man who is rapidly stealing his heart. But Nikko is just a paid hooker…or is he?
The magic in this novel lay in the intimate moments between Nikko and Mitch. Each time they embrace and hold each other, another building block is put in place, sealing both their hearts to each other and grabbing just a piece of ours. While it can be said that the resolution to the untenable situation Nikko finds himself in was a bit easy, the family dynamic surrounding Mitch and the discovery that he was, in essence, falling in love with a whore was so well done that it made even the easy ending palatable. The internal dialogue that filled this novel on both Mitch and Nikko’s part kept the story moving swiftly and created an air of realism, making those revealing moments the best parts of the story.
Unfortunately, I did find myself wanting a bit more action—most definitely when it came to the way in which Nikko was rescued. Without giving too much of the plot away, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop—for the brothel owner to try and get Nikko back—and I was a bit disappointed when that piece of the storyline was dropped. However, this was a love story from start to finish, and one cannot find any fault with the beauty K.C. Wells brings to the page in its telling.
Simply put, Debt delivers a gorgeous story of love that springs from an impossible beginning, only to finish in a place of strength and beauty.
