THIRDS: Beyond the Books: A Guest Post and Giveaway with Charlie Cochet

Hello all! Thank you for joining me on the next stop of the THIRDS Beyond the Books: Volume 1 blog tour. Today is release day and I’m super excited to be sharing with you this volume of flash fiction stories from the THIRDS world written o prompts submitted by readers! Speaking of readers, for today’s stop I have a special treat. I’ll be answering questions about the books and characters form some of the amazing THIRDS Nerds from the THIRDS Nerds Facebook Group!

Hanne Lie: How or why did you decide to go with “cats” when creating your shifters?

Charlie: I love big cats, so there was no question what type of shifters I’d have in the THIRDS world. Since the creation of Therians (shifters) came about through science, there are only a select number of animals that Therians can turn into, though the types vary. We have a lot of big cats, wolves, bears, hyenas, and primates, with big cats making up the whole of Unit Alpha. At the THIRDS, wolves tend to be either medical staff or Recon, while the big cats are Defensive. I loved the idea of these sleek, powerful cats out in the field. It made sense to me that my Defense agents—the brunt force behind Unit Alpha, would be these lethal, sharp clawed, sharp fanged beautiful cats.

Diane Dannenfeldt: Do you have a set amount of books in this series or will you just continue until they stop talking to you? Also, do you plan on any spin offs of this series? Thank you for creating an amazing world and hope for many more to come!!

Charlie: Thank you! I’m so happy you’re enjoying it! I have a set number of books for the original THIRDS series, which is 9. Book 8 is Hudson and Seb’s book, and then we conclude with Dex and Sloane. At the moment there are 3 spin offs planned. I’m super excited about an announcement I’ll be making once Smoke & Mirrors is released in July. The series was always heading in that direction, and it’s been tough keeping it quiet. I can’t wait to share it with everyone! What I can say is we won’t be seeing the last of Dex and Sloane or the DD crew just yet.

Tanya Gemcity: Did Dex and Sloane need a mediator to settle the TP over the top or TP THE WRONGEST WAY when they moved in together?

Charlie: Dex and Sloane have had plenty of compromising to do now that they’re living together, but they’re both sane, rational men, so the question of which way the toilet paper should be placed was never an issue. Over the top, obviously. I think if Sloane put it in the other way Dex would implode.

Henaleh Enirehtak Melas: Hmm. You Probably won’t be able to answer this because perhaps spoilers. But I’ll ask anyway lol Will Tony find love?

Charlie: Of course Tony will find love! And of course it won’t be easy. When is love ever easy? Now when we’ll get to see that is another story. I have some thoughts percolating in my brain, so we’ll see what we can do.

Pam Finn: Did or will Ash ever find out that Sloane can purr in his human form and if he did what did Ash say about that?

Charlie: Ash has yet to find out that Sloane can purr in human form, and for very good reason. Ash would laugh his ass off until the cows came home. Seriously, Sloane would never hear the end of it. Ever. In the whole of his life. Dex is guarding that secret very carefully because not even he wants to give Ash that kind of power. Seriously. It’s Ash. It will never get old.

Elizabeth Beltz: What did Ash get Cael for his birthday before the party was destroyed?

Charlie: The thing with Ash is that he sucks at gifts. He really does. Mostly, it’s when he tries to put too much thought into something that he short circuits himself. Cael’s a techno geek. He knows everything there is to know about that stuff, while Ash just knows enough to get his job done. He’s entry tactics and close quarter combat, he doesn’t need to know about encryption or hacking security feeds, so he would never attempt to get Cael a techy gift, not unless it was like a remote control helicopter or something, which brings me to Ash’s gifts. They are small. When Ash doesn’t overthink it, he ends up picking the perfect gift, because he ends of focusing on the person and not trying to impress them. With Cael, for his birthday, he got him a little stuffed lion holding a heart that says “I Love You” and strapped to its paw, the key to his apartment which is a huge deal because Ash’s apartment is his sanctuary, and the only one with a key is Sloane, and Letty because she’s his partner. It also shows Cael how committed he is to their relationship.

Elizabeth Sand: I would love some answers about Tony. His family and, of course, his love life!

Charlie: Tony is a very, very private man. He’s not prone to outbursts of emotion—unless it’s telling Dex off for something—and he especially doesn’t talk about himself or his family. But we will get to learn a little more in Smoke & Mirrors. Tony’s such an amazing guy, he deserves his own book, really.

Mary Taylor: I would actually love an interview with Herrara, what he thinks about Destructive Delta, and, um, of course Ash.

Charlie: We’ll have to set that up for a THIRDS Thursday! Poor Herrera. He just can’t seem to catch a break. Ash is never going to forget about that damned fern. Never. Ever.

Kenna Greebo Nauenburg: If Ash took Cael out on a date, where would they go and what would they do?

Charlie: Again, Ash likes to keep things simple. Unless he had a particular place in mind, it’s a special occasion, or he wasn’t to surprise Cael, he’ll let Cael pick the place and what they do. That says a lot about how he feels about Cael, because he’s putting all his trust in Cael knowing his boyfriend won’t put him in a situation he finds uncomfortable. Sometimes they double date with Dex and Sloane. Movies, dinner, fun fair. Ash loves spending time with Cael, so he’s really happy to go anywhere with him.

Emma Louise Burbidge: What was the “worst” thing (prank) that Cael and Dex ever did to each other? And how did Tony punish them for it?

Charlie: That sounds like a THIRDS Thursday flash fiction prompt to me! Poor Tony. Growing up, there were many pranks between Dex and Cael. When you have someone like Dex—who someone described as the Energizer Bunny on crack—and Cael with his general Caelness, can you imagine what it must have been like for Tony? The main is a saint and warrior. He took in two small children left broken and alone from the loss of their families, and became a single dad, raising Dex and Cael to be good, kind men with a strong sense of justice. I’m sure he had days where he had no idea what the hell he was doing or if he could even be a dad, but he’s strong, and he persevered, and I don’t think he’d change the experience for anything.

  1. Favorite Big Cat is a toss up between the Cheetahs and Jaguars. Cheetahs are speed demons, all sleek and small but they’re also kind of the goofballs of big cats. Jaguars on the other hand are the mesmerizing stalkers in the big cat world. The move like silk over skin and you just can’t stop watching them.

  2. Leopard. But the reason is kind of silly. My dad loved big cats. All of them but he really liked leopards. Our house when I was little was decorated with a ton of big cat and leopard things like figurines, blankets, pictures, one of those hook rug things that took him 12 years to do, and so much more. When I was probably around sixish he got this big comforter for his bed that had this beautiful leopard on it. It was awesome and after that I started asking for leopard things too.

  3. For me it is a tie between tigers and jaguars. Absolutely love them, very gracious animals especially when you think of their size.

  4. Thanks for the great Q&A! I agree that Tony deserves his own book.

My favs are cheetahs and jaguars. I got to see a cheetah run once and it was amazing. And she had a companion dog – they were so sweet together.
