~Some of my favorite parts about the process of untangling complicated characters and then making them fall in love~
I come up with a great deal of backstory before I start writing. I brainstorm with a writer friend and delve pretty deeply into who my characters are, what their past relationships were like, what their upbringing was. Once I know all that stuff, it’s much easier to get a feel for who they are now.
For instance, in Misinformation, it was important to me to understand what Ethan’s marriage was like, and why it didn’t succeed. His relationship with his wife not only affected the way he approaches his relationship with Charlie, but also offers insight into what really drives his actions in all aspects of his life. Some of that made it into the book, but most of it didn’t. What it did was make it much easier for me to know what his reaction to events would be. Once I understood Ethan, I was then able to figure out what kind of person would make him happy. The challenge then is to make a character that Ethan could fall in love with, but who also has needs of his own that Ethan can satisfy. It’s like a puzzle, and I love puzzles. It’s so gratifying when you get to the point where you can finally put all of the pieces together.
About the Book
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Length: 197 pages
Category: Contemporary Romance
Blurb: Ethan Daniels, host of a popular conservative cable news program, has never thought of his bisexuality as a problem, even though he has never acted on his attraction to men. Since his divorce, his desire has become more acute. When he meets Charlie Woods, his daughter’s first grade teacher, they have an instant spark, but Ethan hesitates to act. His contract is up for renewal, there are already rumors swirling about him because of a brief encounter from his past, and the last thing his employers want is for one of their stars to come out publicly.
Charlie avoids romantic entanglements because he prefers living on his own terms. He keeps love and sex completely separate, never seeing anyone more than a few times. Hooking up with a closeted celebrity like Ethan seems safe from emotional involvement, even if they have to keep their fledgling relationship secret.
The last thing they expect is to fall in love, but their strong mutual attraction moves them both to make changes neither of them thought they wanted or needed.
