Lisa: We’re so pleased to welcome author K.E. Belledonne today, on the tour for her latest novel, Daniel & Erik’s Super Fab Ultimate Wedding Check List.
Thanks for stopping by, K.E. Why don’t we start with a question that’s sort of loaded, coming from a review site.
Do you pay attention to literary criticism? If so, how do you handle it?
K.E.: I try not to pay too much attention to it. With my first novel, I found that some of it seemed to depend on the interests of the critic. If they are someone who’s really into Sci-fi, but they didn’t like my historical novel, then I’m less inclined to take their critique to heart. If they are someone who loves historical novels, and World War II in particular, and they had criticisms of my book, I take that much more seriously.
Also, you know, I have to remind myself that I don’t like every book that I read, either. Maybe they just weren’t feeling it that one week they read my book. Maybe they had something else going on. Maybe my main character had the same name as someone they really can’t stand. Maybe they got yelled at by their boss.
Lisa: How do you come up with the titles for your books?
K.E.: As soon as I knew this was the book I was going to write next, two things popped into my head – the main character’s name is Daniel Seagram Whitcomb, and the title is “Daniel Whitcomb and The Ultimate Wedding Planning Checklist.” The title was modified as the story progressed.
I’m not really sure how I come up with the titles – usually they’re about some small detail of the book. My first novel is titled Right Here Waiting, but the original working title was The Riveting Redhead, which is the name of one of the airplanes in it.
Lisa: What new authors have caught your attention?
K.E.: Unfortunately, I’ve had my head buried working my own book for the past year or so, so I really haven’t been able to read many new authors. I know, from my own publishing house, Interlude Press, I’m ridiculously excited about reading the book Pene Henson’s got coming out, Into The Blue. And I’m chomping at the bit to finish Michelle Osgood’s gamer book, The Better to Kiss You With, which just came out. I gobbled down FT Luken’s The Star Host in about a day—I just couldn’t put it down—and I’m tremendously looking forward to book 2 of that series when it comes out.
Lisa: What would you say is the hardest part of the writing process for you?
K.E.: Adverbs. I overuse them, and I need to cut down.
Other than that, it’s finding time to write when I’ve got the creative energy to do so – sometimes, I can just sit at my computer and stare at the cursor blinking and not think of a single thing worth writing, and other times, I’ll be neck-deep in other projects and have so many great ideas for stories that I can’t do anything about because I’m not near a computer. I have a tiny notebook I take with me everywhere, and I scribble cryptic notes in it.
Lisa: Okay, let’s end this on a completely random note: name your four most important food groups.
K.E.: Peanut butter, cheese, tomatoes and wine.
Lisa: Thanks so much for chatting with us today, K.E., it’s been a pleasure!
