The Crown Jewels
In the Tower of London there is a moving walkway, and it takes you through a tower where the crown jewels are kept. I remember in 1977 it was the Queens Silver Jubilee, and I was 10. At school we have project files to make all about the monarchy, and that included cutting out and sticking pictures of the queen and family, and the castles, and also the crown jewels. I remember spending an afternoon (it was probably only ten minutes or so) cutting around the shape of the crown from my Mum’s copy of the TV Times (UK reference!). Bloody hell, that was a tricky shape to cut around when you have the attention span of a gnat.
Anyway, back to the main story. In the tower we have crowns, and scepters, and hell, the whole lot if probably worth *a lot*. Actually it’s mostly priceless I would imagine. People have tried to steal the crown jewels, I remember learning about that in my monarchy project. To me that sounded quite daring, because y’know, the Tower of London has a bit of a reputation as a place you go to that you don’t ever leave! LOL.
There are stories all over the place of where the jewels in the crowns, etc., came from, and one of them is below.

“ … Koh-i- Noor (Mountain of Light)
105.60 Carats, an oval cut gem, now part of the British Crown Jewels. The name of this diamond means “Mountain of Light” and its history, dating back to 1304, is the longest of all famous diamonds. It was captured by the Rajahs of Malwa in the sixteenth century by the Mogul, Sultan Babur and remained in the possession of later Mogul emperors. It may have been set in the famous Peacock Throne made for Shah Jehan. After the break-up of the Persian empire the diamond found its way to India. It may have traveled to Afghanistan with a bodyguard of Nadir Shah, who fled with the stone when the Shah was murdered, to be later offered to Ranjit Singh of the Punjab in exchange for military help (which was never delivered). After fighting broke out between the Sikhs and the British, The East India Company claimed the diamond as a partial indemnity, and then presented it to Queen Victoria in 1850. When the stone came from India, it weighed l986 carats; it was later recut to l08.93 carats. It was first worn by the Queen in a brooch. It was later set in the State Crown, worn by Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary, and 1937 was worn for by Queen Elizabeth for her coronation. It is kept in the Tower of London, with the other Crown Jewels. …”

About the Authors
Chris Quinton started creating stories not long after she mastered joined-up writing, somewhat to the bemusement of her parents and her English teachers. But she received plenty of encouragement. Her dad gave her an already old Everest typewriter when she was ten, and it was probably the best gift she’d ever received – until the inventions of the home-computer and the worldwide web.
