Writing a New Adult Novel

The Men of London series features a variety of men in different professions and different parts of the city. They also vary a lot in age. From Leslie’s tender age of 23, to Clay’s older and more mature outlook as a man in his late thirties, it’s been fun to re-visit my own years and try instill the emotions and outlook I felt then into the characters I write.

When it came to Jax, I found it very easy to write about him and give him a character I believed would show his tender years and his lack of experience in all thing sexual, coupled with the horniness he’d feel when he finally found someone to discover it with.

You might not believe this but I was a teenager once. Yes, it’s true. I wasn’t always this silver haired fox you see before you J (btw I’ll share something personal with you about this. I used to dye my hair red, because I love being a redhead. Then I let it all grow out because, well, I couldn’t be bothered. When I decided to dye it again I saw my hairdresser and she said, “Sue, do you know how many people come in here asking me for silver and grey highlights? It’s the new season’s fashion colour, sweetie.” So I preened and left it as it was. She might have been lying to me, but now I prefer the ‘au-naturel’ look. I could be stingy and say it also saves time and money.)

Back to writing NA. I’ve had some experience writing this previously in my short story, ‘Out for the Holidays’ about two young men who are in love and it all goes a little wrong over Christmas. Samuel and Lucas, nineteen and eighteen respectively, were my first foray into the New Adult arena. Jax was a little different. He’s naïve, visually impaired, a virgin, completely inexperienced in dating, but with a heart as big as a lion’s and a temper to match. He’s really a typical, hormonal teenager, sometimes immature, sometimes showing wisdom beyond his years. It’s why I matched him with Dare. At twenty- five, Dare is older, wiser, more experienced and settled. He’s not a high flyer, or an Alpha male. He’s just a guy wanting to find another guy to share his life with.

I still remember what I was like when I was Jax’s age, full of angst, uncertainty, hope, dreams and desire. I tried to bring some of that back and it was bitter sweet, remembering my own days. From a writing perspective, I can only hope that the story portrayed Jax realistically, and made people think of either their own teenage years or those of their children.

About the Author

Susan Mac Nicol is a self- confessed bookaholic, an avid watcher of videos of sexy pole dancing men, geek, nerd and in love with her Smartphone. As that’s never going to happen, she contents herself with writing her HEA stories and pretending, that just for a little while, good things happen to good people.
