Writing a Damaged Character
There is nothing like taking a man, heaping angst on him, destroying his past, and making his future nebulous. I love it.
Take Jack Campbell in the Texas books; he was so desperate he was able to be blackmailed into marriage.
Or Viktor in A Reason To Stay, who was all bad boy and focused on staying alive.
Even in The Christmas Throwaway poor Zach had just about reached the limits of even staying alive, let alone contemplating love.
The journey from damaged man to a person capable of allowing themselves to love, to open their hearts up and actually let someone else in, is a storyline that I adore. When I begin writing a book it’s not so much how can I get these two men to a place where they are happy, it’s more one of how much can I destroy their confidence, or hurt them. And I love doing this because it’s the kind of books I like to read. The redemption storylines, the angry man who calms, or the angry man who comes to terms with the fact that he’ll always be angry but that he has found someone who loves him despite that.
In A Cowboy’s Home, the third in my Montana series, Justin is just waiting to die. He’s willing to die, and you can’t get much lower than that. He was lied to, manipulated, and he became a man willing to kill in the name of revenge. But also to kill for his country. I was so involved in his story back to being able to fall in love, but Sam had a lot to do with that.
Because Sam has his own issues, but the one thing he can do, is offer Justin hope.
What are your favorite redemption storylines in books or film?

Justin made the ultimate sacrifice for his country, battling domestic terrorism, never the man he really was, using hate to avenge the death of his best friend. The friend he’d killed.
What he doesn’t count on is getting shot, and if he’s going to die he wants it to be on Crooked Tree soil. Home.
Sam is as much a part of Crooked Tree as any of the families, and the offer to buy into the ranch is a dream come true. But falling for a hidden, secretive, injured man isn’t the way to keep his head in the game.
