Blurb: When his nephew shoots a dove with a BB gun, veterinarian Abel March promises the remorseful boy that he will take care of the bird and its broken wing. He doesn’t count on the dove changing into a (very naked) man in the middle of the night.
The shapeshifter’s name is Darcy and his clan has just moved into the area, much to the dismay of some of the residents who hold prejudices against their kind.
Sweet and sometimes sassy, Darcy is the first man Abel has felt connected to for a long time. He wants to keep him safe, and when someone threatens him, Abel reacts with unusual ferocity. He’s falling in love with Darcy, but when circumstances separate them, he’s left not knowing if the sentiment is returned.
The answer to that question will change both of their lives forever.
Review: In the world Katya Harris has created, shifters exist with humans, although there are often tensions. The shifters tend to keep to themselves in order to prevent unnecessary chaos, but there are just some humans who won’t leave them alone.
When Abel’s nephew shoots and injures a dove, the young boy brings the injured bird to him. Abel promises to care for the bird as best he can; however, he doesn’t expect to wake up one night to find the dove is actually a shifter named Darcy.
I adored the sweet, shy demeanor of Darcy when he first reveals himself to Abel. It’s clear he can trust the man, and Abel is drawn to him not just as a vet caring for an injured animal, but as a man as well. He’s careful to keep his distance, however, until Darcy demands more.
As Darcy heals, the two grow closer, and it’s unsure what will happen to their future. With the tensions ramping up between the shifter and human communities, Darcy and Abel may not be able to stay together, and it left me wondering where the author was going with the story.
This is the first title I’ve read from Katya Harris, and based on her handling of characters and setting, this is an author I would be happy to read again.
