Blurb: Xavi doesn’t believe in love anymore. Love has never changed the outcome of anything. It has only hurt him.
Sam is sick, and he wants one last thing. He wants Xavi to be with him, to stay with him until the end. Xavi drops everything and promises Sam he will be there.
As they travel across the countryside in a stolen sea-green Cadillac, they search for something neither has the courage to admit he’s looking for. But as the days slip away, Xavi isn’t sure he can keep his promise; he isn’t sure about anything. He can’t help Sam do this. He can’t stand by and watch Sam suffer, can’t be content to let Sam give up.
Saving Sam becomes the only thing that makes any sense, the only thing Xavi wants. Loving Sam becomes the most important promise he will ever make. Now he just has to convince Sam that life—and love—are worth fighting for.
Review: I cannot begin to express to you the remarkable beauty of author Suki Fleet’s words in her latest release, Wildflowers. There were times during the reading of this novella that I was literally breathless. The amount of emotion and all the raw truth hidden in every sentence this author writes is staggering. Honestly, it’s like poetry, and yet with each word on the page, more and more of the characters’ hearts and minds are revealed to the reader. To say that I enjoyed this story would be to minimize the impact it had on me. The journey that Xavi and Sam take, the love that is finally exposed and brought into the light, and the sheer magnitude of the hope that is offered, is nothing short of amazing.
Sam is dying. He has sought out Xavi to help him fulfill his last wish–not to die alone. Throughout most of their short journey toward the sea and the field of wildflowers that Xavi promises he will bring Sam to before he dies, Xavi avoids thinking about what is going to eventually happen. You see, Xavi is running, running from the truth that he loves Sam more than his own life. The fact that he cannot somehow save Sam causes him to remain silent about his real feelings, and when he finally nearly loses his sweet young man, Xavi finds his strength and the truth pours out. But it may be too late.
It is not often that a story leaves me speechless. How to rate something that is so beautiful and filled with remarkably tender moments? I raced through this novella, my hands clenching my Kindle in fear that somehow this ending would not be a happy one. I can assure you that was not the case, and yet the truth is often a painful thing to deal with and to accept. Xavi must do both of those things, and hope that he is not too late to salvage the love that he hopes Sam has for him in return.
I cannot recommend Wildflowers more highly than to say this story will be one that I read again and again, and I am sure that each time I will glean just a bit more from the beautiful words this author shaped into an outstanding story.
