Blurb: Aidan Hill, a shrewd lawyer, has success written all over him. He has worked very hard to construct a promising career and cares a great deal about his professional image–perhaps too much. After making partner before an unprecedented thirty-five, he is handed one of the firm’s most challenging cases. However, when he inadvertently sleeps with the lead investigator for the case, Jaxon Kane, his world turns inside-out. The passion between them is overwhelming and all consuming. He can’t get enough of Jaxon, but he has to stay away or the conflict of interest could tank the case of a lifetime. That can’t happen. A woman’s freedom is in jeopardy.
Jaxon Kane is a man who, when he sees what he wants, goes after it without hesitation. And he wants Aidan. He’s a strong, formidable man who believes that he can do his job and build something meaningful with Aidan. But, how does he convince him when Aidan is focusing solely on his career and winning this case? As much as he wants Aidan, he won’t be anyone’s secret. He knows Aidan wants him. Will Aidan do what it takes to prove it to Jaxon?
Review: Even though I personally couldn’t get into this book, I truly believe I will be one of few. I think this book will be enjoyed by many people that read the genre. Especially the mystery aspect, which I admit to being very intrigued by. But…some parts just exasperated me to no end. More specifically; Aidan, as a character, exasperated me to no end. Since it was mostly written from his point of view, I was stuck and couldn’t get out.
Aidan is an attorney who has recently made partner in his firm. Jaxon and Aidan meet and have a one-night-stand on the night Aidan goes with his buddies to celebrate. Then, surprise, Jaxon turns out to be the newly hired head investigator for the firm, taking the place of someone who had been canned for fooling around with co-workers. Immediately upon seeing each other, Aidan is ready to hop back in bed with the gorgeous guy, but tries to curb it. He doesn’t want to end up in an inappropriate situation, knowing the rest of the partners would frown upon it, specifically one in particular. Immediately the two are thrown together to try to prove Aidan’s client innocent. Pretty much a recipe for greatness. But… nope. Didn’t happen for me.
Aidan spends the book panicking or in confusion, wanting to be alone with Jaxon and knowing he shouldn’t, and then giving in only to pull back away. Basically, giving Jaxon quite a few mixed signals. For Aidan being a respected lawyer, who had just made partner, I still felt I was reading the internal dialogue of a teenager more often than not. Most of the time he seemed incapable of making a decision for himself, or sticking to the ones he made. It was exhausting reading his thoughts.
Jaxon is pretty confident and fun. He wants more than a one-night-stand with Aidan and lets him know that immediately. I actually enjoyed Jaxon’s character quite a bit. He was fairly up front with what he wanted, seemed to be able to separate business and pleasure (to some degree), and was ultimately a nice guy. I felt bad for him several times while Aidan jerked him around and when he put Aidan in his place, I was clapping my hands.
Soooo… all the makings of what should have been a great read for me. Sadly, it wasn’t, mainly because I couldn’t connect to (or truly like) Aidan all that much. He rubbed me the wrong way, and even the mystery and Jaxon couldn’t bring me out of the funk or get me invested.
