Blurb: High Priest S’Rak is cursed with the ability to foretell the future. Sometimes. The problem with prophecy is that the Gods get involved and if any God is working to complete one, there’s always another God working to prevent it. S’Rak knows that something bad is coming. He knows that he can leave and avoid a great deal of pain and suffering and woe.
Captain Jisten doesn’t have mystical abilities to rely on, so he relies on his own senses and on logic. A murder in the city of a person he holds dear drives a deeper wedge between the already strained relations he has with the high priest. The events of the summer continue to haunt him even as S’Rak is named a murder suspect.
Review: Kazia is the first book in the Dark Servant II series. Why I thought I could jump in here I have no idea… maybe because it is the start of Dark Servant II versus the original series. The Dark Servant I has three volumes of work, with thirty-four individual stories contained in those volumes—this is one long body of work meant to be read in order. The Dark Servant II is the beginning of volume four, and admittedly, while the author says this is a good entry point to the story, it was kinda like watching a sequel to an epic blockbuster movie—while you may enjoy it, and I did, I could tell there were massive gaps in my knowledge of this world, its people, and their relationships with each other. After all, we are talking about a series that sports its own Facebook page. Volume four, which this book begins, is planned out with ten individual stories through January 2018, so I guess in that respect it is a good place to join the story, and yes, there will be a volume five; there is lots more story to tell.
A.C. Ellas is a master storyteller in the fantasy fiction genre. Her worlds are complicated, her main characters are complicated, her scene building is complicated, but that just makes her books that much richer to read. There are gods and goddesses, good vs evil, magic, eroticism; in short, everything you want in a good fantasy series. Unfortunately, I can’t rate the series because I haven’t read it, I have only read Kazia, which I can say is an excellent book. By the time I had finished it, I did have a pretty good idea of the main characters and a hint of their backstory. I had a mental picture of the world they live in and the intricate, convoluted relationships they have with one another. The magic was believable, the pace of the book comfortable to read while trying to piece the puzzle together, and it left me wanting more. Oh, which is something I need to mention: because this is a series, an ongoing storyline, the book ends at the end of an individual scene, not the end of the story…. Be aware.
Are you looking for a long term fantasy series? Seemingly a really good one, with great characters and intricate worlds? Then this is the book and the series for you. Jump in here with Kazia. I believe it is just after intermission, with the ongoing play of characters taking the stage once more.
