Blurb: A man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.
When he wakes up in the hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can’t remember anything to help… except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Two words, and they’re not much, but it’s a start: Crooked Tree.
Detective Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for the two boys who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan’s desk that may give new leads, he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn’t his brother, but it’s someone who could maybe help him discover what happened twelve years ago.
What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could destroy any kind of future they may have together.
Review: The Rancher’s Son is the continuing story of the disappearance of Justin Allens and Adam Strachan, creating misery for three families who share Crooked Tree land—the Todds, the Allens, and the Strachans.
Ethan Allens is a detective for the Missoula PD. He could have lived the life of a rancher at Crooked Tree, but the loss of his brother, Justin, and friend, Adam, made him determined to be an officer of the law. Needless to say, his choice to be a detective and his belief in his brother caused further turmoil with him and his father.
After twelve years of searching, Ethan finally catches a break. He finds Adam but he’s been severely beaten and has lost his memory. Ethan takes Adam back to Crooked Tree where he starts to get bits and pieces of his memory back. Adam finds himself feeling guilty that Justin hasn’t been found yet, and it weighs heavy on his mind. And, what of him and Ethan? Did they have something special and can they ever get it back?
When I first started to read this book, I thought it was going to be about finding Adam and Adam getting his memory back, but The Rancher’s Son turned out to be exciting, suspenseful, and a nicely plotted mystery with lots of high emotion. What RJ Scott really brings to the storyline is the reunion of old friends, family, and a father and son who have to come to terms with their relationship. There’s also danger in store for Ethan and Adam, and a shocking surprise. I don’t want time to fly by really fast, but I am so looking forward to A Cowboy’s Home, the next book in the Montana series.
