Promising a ride into town, Zakhar leads Armand and the general back to the trailhead…and right into an ambush. Armand finds himself back at what he learns is a massive estate…populated by people believing they are vampires and shifters. Zakhar explains why they captured the general, but after being lied to by the man, can Armand believe a word out of his mouth? On top of that, holding a general against his will goes against everything Armand has been trained to believe in. How can he just let that go?
Review: Armand Zeroni is the soldier who Zakhar Kuznetsov recognized as his beloved during the mission to capture General Parker from his base in book thirty-five. General Parker has been discovered to be funding and promoting the capture of paranormals, including his own daughter-in-law. His grandchild had been kidnapped and he has complete disdain for everyone, but when Armand wakes up and discovered he’s in a strange place, and he finds the general tied up, he falls back into Marine mode and decides to get them out of there.
Zakhar manages to redirect Armand and the general back to the coven lands, and they are recaptured. Zakhar is then faced with explaining paranormals—and the battle they are waging to keep their kind safe—to his newly discovered, bisexual mate. Armand feels the pull, but he’s really skeptical about everything else.
When he decides to follow up with his own sources, there is trouble at the compound, but Armand’s family and friends come through for him. It seems that General Parker really is a bad guy, and Armand wants to help stop him.
This installment in the Wolves of Stone Ridge series was a tad disappointing to me. There was too little of Armand and Zakhar together, and a rather abrupt ending. I would have liked more time with them. I did really like Armand’s fellow marines, who had his back. I hope we get some more of this story in the next book.
