Guest Post and Giveaway: Take Me Home by Lorelei Brown

Last January, I went to visit a puppy on my lunch break. She was tiny and adorable, a little ball of black fluff who cuddled up to my shoulder and gave me hugs. She was a yorkie-poo, which meant that she was guaranteed to be approximately the same size as my 10 year old shih-tzu, Gizmo, which was a really important factor. I was looking for a friend to bring life back to my old man, so they needed to be fairly equal. When she laid her muzzle on my shoulder and sighed, I was sunk. I had to have her. On my way home from work that day, I stopped and picked her up even though there was a wicked snow storm because I couldn’t bear the idea that maybe someone else would pick her.

I got stuck in the snow on my block because of that itty bitty puppy with black fur and black eyes. She almost got named Hoth as a result, but we ended up going with Rey.

There’s a little black dog in Take Me Home. It’s a yorkie-poo. Coincidence? Of course not.

Keighley and Brooke first meet their yorkie-poo at Thanksgiving dinner at Keighley’s family home. Technically the puppy belongs to Keighley’s cousin, but dog stealing is totally okay when someone abuses the dog in question. I promise. Keighley names her puppy Bennet, and I had such a great time writing puppy time. Bennet/Rey is so adorable, she deserves all the page time I gave her.

She’s growing into a good dog, too. Sunday mornings, she licks my nose exactly once to tell me it’s time to get up and let her outside. She and my shih-tzu get along really well – they chase each other in laps around the kitchen. It must be nice to be small enough that you can get your daily steps in that easily.  They both play fetch, but Gizmo hates it when Bennet/Rey beats him to the toy every. Single. Time. She’s young; he’s slow. They’re lucky they’re cute. That’s how they wiggle their way into your heart.

I regret nothing about writing my puppy into Take Me Home. It was so much fun. You know, I wonder if my accountant will let me write her fees off…
