Blurb: Love between a young man with a broken mind and the jaded New Vampire Justice officer who cares for him might be the last hope to stop a human-vampire war….
Justin Masters is stuck in a nightmare. Waking after seven years in a catatonic state, he falls desperately in love with the straight NVJ officer who saved him. Between that and dreams of being tortured and taking pleasure in the pain, which bleeds into his waking hours, Justin’s sure he’s starting to crack.
The growing unrest in the vampire world should be Max Kincaid’s focus, but Justin’s struggle, along with Max’s confusing feelings for his ward, have him reeling. When Justin’s attacked, his resulting needs might be more than what Max can provide, but he’ll be damned if anyone else will touch Justin.
As the NVJ investigates humans missing from a high-end bite club, they uncover a deeper plot that traces back to Justin. If those who want him have their way, there will be bloodshed. Justin and Max are in a fight to save Justin not only from those who would use him, but from his own mind.
Review: What an incredibly intense sequel Jake C. Wallace has written! A Chance for Us, book number two in the New Vampire Justice series has finally arrived, and it is bolder, darker and more exciting than its predecessor. Speaking of which, it has been two years since the first novel, Dare to Love Forever, and if you have not read it, then stop reading this and do so now for this review will make little sense to you, nor will this new novel without reading the first. Secondly, if it has been two years (and it had been for me) since you read the first installment, I would recommend a reread as it took me a few chapters to recall a lot of what had previously occurred, which, in turn, helped make sense of what I was reading in the sequel. There are a ton of familiar faces in this book, and it literally picks up where the last left off, and it is so good—oh yes, it is!
For those who recall the first story, you will remember that Justin was once in love with Carson, who was forced to bite him, sending him into a seven year long coma from which he has just awoken. Since that time, Carson has met and fallen in love with the head of the New Vampire Justice branch in New York, Lincoln Samuels. Both Carson and Lincoln are vampires of different sorts and have special powers, as such. But this story focuses on the newly awakened Justin and the NJV cop he is currently housed with–his friend and protector, Max Kincaid. While Max doesn’t quite understand his intense feelings for Justin, he does know that no one has touched him quite as much since the death of his wife several years before. Max is straight and so he dismisses his feelings as those likened to a big brother feel for Justin. Justin, on the other hand, grapples with the fact that he is slowly but surely falling in love with Max.
If that were not enough entanglement, Justin is also gripped by a stunningly visceral need to be controlled sexually by pain and dominance. He wants–no, needs–to feel that pain in order to orgasm, and he begins to fear for his own sanity and control when the need for such arousal begins to be the only thing other than Max’s presence that can calm the tangled web of fear and confusion in his mind. When Max goes out on a date, an upset Justin decides to take matters into his own hands and visit a highly select and secret brothel that caters to vampires and BDSM. Unfortunately for Justin, he doesn’t realize until too late that he has actually delivered himself right into the hands of a sinister web of slave like control via sexual abuse that has held him captive before. Now Max and company are in a race to find Justin, plus others who have disappeared, from the same club before Justin’s mind and control are utterly destroyed. Along the way, Max will realize his feelings for Justin are much more than a brotherly love—now, if he can find the young man and finally let him know just what that means for them both.
I am going to be upfront here and tell you that what I just wrote above was a terrible synopsis of an utterly fantastic novel! While it is admittedly dark and deals with abuse via sexual torture, brain washing and pain, this story was incredibly detailed and absolutely captivating. Not only did I fall in love with both Justin and Max, my appreciation for this network of vampire cops grew exponentially with each chapter. This was an intricately woven mystery complete with the most evil bad guys to ever grace a novel. I couldn’t put this one down—it seemed as though every few chapters another horrifying situation would arise, and once more someone would be pulled back from utter destruction. Not only that but it tied up so many loose ends from the first novel that it was so very satisfying to read–how some survived and managed to find happiness despite the hell they had gone through was just amazing.
With this latest installment, author Jake C. Wallace has established himself as a writing force to be contended with, and then some. Intense, fast paced, action driven and a bit of romance to boot are all phrases that best describe this wonderful novel. I highly recommend it to you.
