Thanks so much to Lisa and the TNA crew for having me today to celebrate their blogiversary! My new release, The Next Competitor, is about the world of men’s figure skating, and I thought it would be fun to share with you my top five favorite programs of the last year or so.
I follow skating religiously and realize that most people don’t. With the 2018 Olympics coming up in just over a year (how time flies!) in PyeongChang, South Korea, here are a few of the top male contenders to watch out for.
5. American Jason Brown at Skate America in October 2016. This long program is such a step up in maturity for Jason. I love how the woman opening the door in the boards to the Kiss and Cry was crying herself because she was so moved by his gorgeous skating.
4. Canada’s Patrick Chan nailed his Beatles medley short program last week at the Grand Prix Final. He’s struggled with inconsistency throughout his career, but his “skating skills” (edges, transitions, flow, stops, turns, speed) are the best in the world, in my humble opinion. Sublime.
3. Javier Fernandez of Spain defended his world title in March 2016. Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu was having an amazing season (see below), and I honestly don’t think anyone (including me) expected Javi to be able to beat him again. But under enormous pressure and with a painful landing foot, he did it with a gorgeous performance.
2. Japan’s Shomo Uno is like an anime character come to life. (Speaking of anime, I still have to watch Yuri on Ice! I hear so many great things about it.) Tiny, adorable, and incredibly talented, Shoma made his mark last season in his first year as a senior. His signature cantilever into the flying camel on the swell of “Nessun Dorma” at 4:55 in the video gives me chills every time. My character Alex skates to the same music, and I listened to it on repeat while working on the book.
1. Yuzuru Hanyu’s winning long program from the 2015 Grand Prix Final last December was one of the most difficult and well-skated programs ever in my book.
Do you have any favorite men’s skating programs? Would love to hear your thoughts!

About the Book
To win gold, figure skater Alex Grady must train harder than the competition morning, noon, and night. He’s obsessed with mastering another quadruple jump, and due to the lack of filter between his mouth and brain, doesn’t have a lot of friends. As for a boyfriend, forget it. So what if he’s still a virgin at twenty? The Olympics are only every four years—everything else can wait. Relationships are messy and complicated anyway, and he has zero room in his life for romance.
So it’s ridiculous when Alex finds himself checking out his boring new training mate Matt Savelli. Calm, collected “Captain Cardboard” is a nice guy, but even if Alex had time to date, Matt’s so not his type. Yet beneath Matt’s wholesome surface, there’s a dirty, sexy man who awakens a desire Alex has never experienced and can’t deny…
Note: This gay romance from Keira Andrews features opposites attracting, new adult angst, sexual discovery, and of course a happy ending.

I always watch skating during the Olympics, men, women, pairs and dance. If I can I watch Skate America or Skate Canada when it is aired where I live.

It’s funny I haven’t watched any Ice skating for years since GB’s Jane Torville and Christopher Dean retired they were so good. Maybe I should start watching again! I loved the first edition and I have the book on my wish list.

I don’t know enough about skating to have a favorite and I also don’t have cable TV or watch much TV. However, your new book sounds really good. I love to read stories that involve athletes more than watching sports.
Thanks for the post!

I really enjoyed watching Brian Boitano win a gild medal at the Olympics. That Olympics was the last one that I watched the figure skating in for a long time.

It’s been years since I’ve obsessively watched figure skating on TV (not since the days of Michelle Kwan). However, I just read The Next Competitor, and one thing that it inspired me to do was to look for clips of figure skating on Youtube. I was looking up quad Sals and pairs lifts just so I could “see” what the characters were doing. Thanks for sharing these great videos.

it’s not something I watch….Australia doesn’t have much of a skate program that I’m aware of

I don’t have a favorite program but I do enjoy watching figure skating. It’s one of the draws of the Winter olympics and also winter months.

I love figure skating. I used to watch it a while ago but it isn’t a sport usually transmitted where I live and definitely not practiced. I used to love Johnny Weir, Belbin and Agosto, Stéphane Lambiel, but most of all Evgeny Plushenko. I had so much fun watching it. Right now I lost track of competitor, I know some, and one of my favorites is Jason Brown. Thank you for sharing your favorite programs. I still have in my mind some exhibition programs I liked because of how fun they were, ine was Plushenko’s sex bomb and the other Belbin and Agosto’s green acres.

I don’t watch TV, thus, no fave. skating program. But I must admit, watching those videos brought tears to my eyes, especially that UNO kid! Wow! Can he dance! He’s a total artist on the ice.
Your book sounds quite good. Much success to you, Keira.

I remember Boitano and his 1988 programming, but I’m more of a hockey gal. So, I’m more about breakaways, penalty kills, one-timers, and playmaking sequences. (Ovechkin rolling over and scoring a no-look goal on his back in ’06, several Torrey Mitchell goals when he was with the Sharks, Pavel Datsyuk when he was still in Detroit, to name a few..)

Congrats on the new release and thank you so much for sharing the clips! I haven’t had cable for a few years now, more time for reading ;) , and I didn’t realize how Much I missed ice skating. I’ve always enjoyed male skating a bit more than female, but love them both. Won’t say how long I’ve been following the sport because that would really date me. :) I’m not sure I can pick a particular routine, but I can list a few of my past favs. Canadian Elvis Stojko, French Philippe Candeloro, Russian Alexandrovich Kulik, American Todd Eldredge, to name just a few. I am really looking forward to this book. Thanks for a chance in the giveaway.

Jason Brown’s U.S. Nationals Riverdance program in 2014. That relit my love for figure skating after not watching for years. The crowd was so into it and he really owned it that night. Another fun one from awhile back is Kurt Browning’s Brickhouse.

Congratulations on your new release! I haven’t watched the figure skating in years, I’m ashamed to say. I used to enjoy how graceful it was.
