Blogiversary Celebration and Giveaway: Welcome to Author Jay Northcote!

Please help us welcome author Jay Northcote, who’s here to help us celebrate our Blogiversary as well as share his gratitude for some good things that have happened in 2016. He’s also sharing a great giveaway so be sure to check out the details for that below.

Welcome, Jay!

Congratulations on your Blogiversary, Lisa, and thank you to you and all your reviewers for everything that you do for this genre. I’m very grateful to you :)

On the subject of gratitude, I want to write a little about the things I have to be thankful for with the end of the year approaching. 2016 has been a difficult and painful year of change globally, and also closer to home for me. Coming out as transgender has shaken my life to its foundations. But despite all the difficult things about that realisation, I still have many blessings to count.

The most positive part about coming out has been the amazing support and acceptance that I’ve had from people in my life, both those close to me, but also from more casual acquaintances. I live in a small, relatively conservative community in the UK and was very worried about how people would react when I made my announcement. I’m happy to report that my fears were unfounded, and people have surprised me in the best possible way. I’m very fortunate to live in a part of the world where this kind of acceptance is now the norm for many.

Even though my coming out as trans (and queer) changes things for my husband, he’s been supportive and respectful, and whatever else happens I’m confident that we will have a positive relationship in the future as friends and co-parents.

Sadly, neither of my parents is still here to see the man I’m becoming, but I like to think they would have supported me. I have three sisters and they’re all doing their best to get used to the idea of having a brother, and two teenage kids who are trying to work out whether they want to call me something other than mum—they haven’t decided yet! I’m very blessed to have a family who love me unconditionally, and I never take this for granted.

My holiday book this year is about two characters with very different experiences of family. A Family for Christmas is dedicated to my sisters because I’m so lucky to have them in my life.

About A Family for Christmas

Zac never had a family of his own, but Rudy has enough to share.

Shy, inexperienced Rudy has a crush on Zac from the moment his new colleague walks through the door. On an office night out before Christmas, Rudy finds the courage to make a move, and they form a tentative bond. When he discovers Zac will be alone at Christmas, he invites Zac to come home with him.

Zac prefers to keep people at arm’s length. Yet when Rudy offers him a family Christmas it’s impossible to resist. With no parents of his own, Zac is pleasantly surprised to be welcomed by Rudy’s. The only drawback is that everyone assumes they’re a couple. Unwilling to disappoint Rudy’s mum and make Christmas awkward, they decide not to deny it.

It’s not a chore for Zac to pose as Rudy’s boyfriend, but the pretence makes him want things that scare him—things like a real relationship with Rudy. Zac’s suffered enough rejection in his life already and is afraid to risk his heart. If he can get over his past rejection and let Rudy inside his armour, he might get more for Christmas than he ever imagined.

  7. Jay, I’m so happy that your community & most important your family is supportive of your transition.
2016 has been a difficult year, however on a positive note, my son who is also trans has recovered well from his top surgery & is doing well in his therapy as well as made it through the fall semester of college without any major issues. We’ll call it a win!

  8. It’s a wonderful thing to hear that you’re feeling more yourself and have been getting the support you deserve, Jay! This has been some year, and while it’s hard not to see the bad, I am trying to remember the good. Personally I have not had too many highs, but all the wonderful little moments, time with friends and family and great books gives me fuel to face the bad. May we all have many great moments in 2017!
