Thanks, Vanessa, and welcome!
On Marking Time
I’m so thrilled to be here as part of The Novel Approach’s Blogiversary celebration!
Lisa and her team at The Novel Approach have been blogging for 5 years now—which is an incredible feat in a world where life moves fast and blogs come and go, so I started to think about what anniversaries mean to us—not in a “the Earth has travelled around the sun X number of times” way, but in the way humans measure memories.
A baby’s first year marked at the end with a cake to smash. A couple, no longer newlyweds, pulling the top of their cake out of the freezer and daring each other to eat it. A member of a twelve step program receiving a coin to mark their sobriety. A group of friends gathering 5, 10, 20, or more years after graduation to remember who they used to be and celebrate who they’ve become. Anniversaries mean a lot to us, not just to measure what we have and who we’ve become, but to remember who we’ve been, what we’ve lost, what we’ve surrendered gladly into our pasts, and what we’ll never give up, no matter what.
We see trends in LGBTQ romance come and go. We see authors rise and fade or rise and keep rising, and we celebrate our successes together. We share Facebook memories—what book was that? Oh, hey, there we all were at GRL! We look back and remember and we look ahead and promise more memories in years to come.
The Novel Approach has been a fixture in our community for longer than I’ve been an author. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting them at conferences and sharing our lives—and book recs!—on social media, and I’m looking forward to many more years of celebrating anniversaries with them.
Happy 5th, Lisa and team. I’m so happy to mark this year with you and yours!
About the Author
Author of over a dozen novels, novellas, and short stories, Vanessa North delights in giving happy-ever-afters to characters who don’t think they deserve them. Relentless curiosity led her to take up knitting and run a few marathons “just to see if she could.” She started writing for the same reason. Her very patient husband pretends not to notice when her hobbies take over the house. Living and writing in Northwest Georgia, she finds her attempts to keep a quiet home are frequently thwarted by twin boy-children and a very, very large dog.
