As Lisa and TNA celebrate their fifth anniversary, I decided to get a little retrospective. Five years ago, I was naively about embark on this exciting, challenging, emotional rollercoaster of a journey as a published author. I was receiving my daily Dreamspinner Advent Calendar story and thinking that maybe, just maybe, I could do this too. After all, I had always considered myself a writer, even if I had never had the courage to publish. So, soon after Christmas 2011, I took a chance and submitted my first novella, Fourth and Long. It was published later that spring. Little did I know then that this side career of mine would be the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Five years ago, I wasn’t on Facebook or Goodreads; I didn’t have a blog (which to be honest I still don’t manage to update frequently anyway); I didn’t know what an ARC was, and I had no idea there was this whole book review blog universe out there. And while I still may not be very active in social media or in the larger writing community, I take it very seriously. I watch, I read, I listen, and here is what I’ve learned over the last five years:

• Writing is the easy part, and everything that comes after is the challenge
• Sometimes it’s best to stay quiet and smile
• Every reader matters
• Always write as if no one is reading (and then find a great editor!)
• Unless you are a masochist, authors should stay away from reader reviews (good or bad)
• Without readers, reviewers and blogs like Novel Approach, who volunteer their time to spread the word, I would have given up long ago
