What is it about Cowboys, Anyway?

Hey, y’all! I’m Julia Talbot and I’m here to talk about my novella Jackass Flats. It’s a cowboy story set just before the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which is important, because cowboy Tate’s new thing just happens to be in the military.

So, what is it about the cowboy mythos that lends itself to romance, anyway? And what kind of cowboys do I write?

I have to admit, I wrote this story a while back, and it is a reprint that Dreamspinner kindly agreed to publish as long as I wrote a new book for the series. I just turned in Riding the Circuit, so yay! (I mention this just so no one who bought it before feels cheated if they buy it again!) Go me!

Back to the cowboys. I used to write quite a few. Then I started on paranormals and I didn’t look back, especially since my wife tends to write cowboys well and often. I write Colorado and New Mexico cowboys. I write guys who work tiny ranches or who own a little plot of land. I write small town rodeo cowboys who never made the big bucks and sometime ones who did.

One thing I do try to do is keep my cowboys real to the ones I’ve known. My grandfather was a cowboy. My wife’s daddy is a cowboy. I worked at a stable for years in exchange for access to horses and I grew to know a good many cowboys. I followed the bullriding circuit for almost a decade and got to be on a first name basis with some of the most famous cowboy in modern times. I never had to hire a consultant for my rodeo stories. I just had to pick up the phone and ask questions.

Cowboys make amazing alpha heroes because they work hard. By its very nature their job creates strong, stubborn men not used to taking no for an answer, but with a code of conduct that doesn’t allow them to take advantage. They’re mule-headed, tough as dirt, and don’t even get me started on the Wranglers and boots. They’re as much an icon of America as SEALS and self-made billionaires, but they’re more down to earth. More real.

So, that’s the kind of cowboys I write, and that’s who military man Dave falls in love with in Tate. Who lives in Jackass Flats. I hope y’all love them.
