Welcome, Julia!
What is it about Cowboys, Anyway?
Hey, y’all! I’m Julia Talbot and I’m here to talk about my novella Jackass Flats. It’s a cowboy story set just before the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, which is important, because cowboy Tate’s new thing just happens to be in the military.
So, what is it about the cowboy mythos that lends itself to romance, anyway? And what kind of cowboys do I write?
I have to admit, I wrote this story a while back, and it is a reprint that Dreamspinner kindly agreed to publish as long as I wrote a new book for the series. I just turned in Riding the Circuit, so yay! (I mention this just so no one who bought it before feels cheated if they buy it again!) Go me!
Back to the cowboys. I used to write quite a few. Then I started on paranormals and I didn’t look back, especially since my wife tends to write cowboys well and often. I write Colorado and New Mexico cowboys. I write guys who work tiny ranches or who own a little plot of land. I write small town rodeo cowboys who never made the big bucks and sometime ones who did.
One thing I do try to do is keep my cowboys real to the ones I’ve known. My grandfather was a cowboy. My wife’s daddy is a cowboy. I worked at a stable for years in exchange for access to horses and I grew to know a good many cowboys. I followed the bullriding circuit for almost a decade and got to be on a first name basis with some of the most famous cowboy in modern times. I never had to hire a consultant for my rodeo stories. I just had to pick up the phone and ask questions.
Cowboys make amazing alpha heroes because they work hard. By its very nature their job creates strong, stubborn men not used to taking no for an answer, but with a code of conduct that doesn’t allow them to take advantage. They’re mule-headed, tough as dirt, and don’t even get me started on the Wranglers and boots. They’re as much an icon of America as SEALS and self-made billionaires, but they’re more down to earth. More real.
So, that’s the kind of cowboys I write, and that’s who military man Dave falls in love with in Tate. Who lives in Jackass Flats. I hope y’all love them.

Book: Jackass Flats
Author: Julia Talbot
Blurb: Can a traveling military man and a set-in-his-ways cowboy find a way to make things work?
Tate feels like the best part of life has probably passed him by, which is why the thirtysomething cowboy hits the bars every night. When he meets Dave, a young soldier from a nearby Army base, though, Tate figures things might be looking up. He and Dave get off to a rocky start, but Tate soon finds that he and the kid have enough in common to make things interesting.
Dave isn’t really into the whole don’t ask, don’t tell thing, and he doesn’t bother to hide his relationship with Tate from his friends. Once he realizes he should have been more careful, it might be too late. But Dave is willing to fight for Tate, even if it means taking on the military.

Love to read it.
Hi, Jules! The moment I’ve come to know in upcoming week sneak peek post of TNA that you’ll be guesting here, I was so ELATED! I’m an avid fan of your works especially Bloodrose, Elemental Ops & Keeping Score series. I’ve read the first installment of Alpha Tales too (which I loved very much… What? Rand & Tate are adorable together! <3 )

Thanks for the post, Julia. You had the childhood setting I wanted as a kid. But, alas I grew up in suburbia.
Hi Julia, thanks for the post for today. I admit that I am not a big reader of cowboys and military-men :p. My preference seems to be more for law enforcement men a.k.a detectives or FBI agents

congrats on the latest release
Hi Julia. I hope you have a fantastic new year!
Happy Holidays! I am looking forward to reading this book!
I haven’t read this one, but I do love cowboy stories. I remember once seeing an author (who doesn’t write cowboy stories) say she knew too many to be able to write them favorably. I’m glad your grandfather and father-in-law, as well as the ones you knew at stables and on the circuit, prove that’s not the case for everyone. Thanks for sharing with us!
Hi Julia, thanks for the post. I love the title, “Jackass Flats”!
Honestly I love PNR more than cowboy stories, but it sounds like you have have insider info and wouldn’t romanticize things.
Happy 2017! Thanks for the giveaway.
Congrats and thanks for the post and giveaway. I feel you about cowboys. I love gay westerns – I’m from Texas, and grew up on a steady feed of westerns and Rangers.
I love stories about cowboys…my dad was one. Look forward to reading Jackass Flats. Thanks for the giveaway!
