Music & Writing

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about my appalling taste in music, so I thought I’d revisit that subject.

I don’t have specific playlists for specific books. Usually, my playlist du jour will last me for a few months, during which time I’ll write multiple books. For whatever reason, the tone of the music doesn’t really need to jive with the tone of the book. I can listen to fluffy pop while writing car chases and murders, hip hop while writing sex scenes… doesn’t matter.

So what am I listening to these days? Of course there are the constant favorites, like 30 Seconds to Mars (obviously), Adam Lambert, Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Emma Hewitt, Fall Out Boy, OneRepublic, and Erasure. No playlist on my iPod is complete without those artists. And I have my sorry-not-sorry guilty pleasures—Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, various boy bands, Miley Cyrus, more Taylor Swift, Celine Dion, more boy bands, etc. Bastille has also become a permanent fixture. In fact, I’m counting down the days until I get to see them liiiiiiive. *fangirl squee*

In the last couple of years, I’ve discovered and gotten hooked on John Newman, Tove Lo, Lindsey Stirling, and Tokio Hotel. I know, soooo late to the party on Tokio Hotel, but that’s not unusual for me. Hell, I just got hooked on Westlife like last year. I’m always the last one to find out about an artist. LOL

And of course my readers will probably not be the least bit surprised to know that Tooji has spent the last year and a half or so on my list of artists who are constantly playing. (Incidentally, if you haven’t seen The Father Projectyou’re welcome. NSFW.)

So, you’re probably not actually wondering but are about to find out anyway, what are the songs I listen to the most while I’m writing?

    1. La La La – Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith
    2. Rebels – Tooji
    3. Underneath – Adam Lambert
    4. The Kill – 30 Seconds to Mars
    5. Northern Lights – 30 Seconds to Mars
    6. Say Yeah – Tooji
    7. Somewhere With You – Kenny Chesney
    8. Love Who Loves You Back – Tokio Hotel
    9. Love Me Again – John Newman
    10. All Out of Love – Andru Donalds
    11. Hurricane – 30 Seconds to Mars
    12. Deadlines and Commitments – The Killers
    13. Father – Tooji
    14. Drink to That All Night – Jerrod Neiman
    15. My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark – Fall Out Boy
    16. Burnin It Down – Jason Aldean
    17. Conquistador – 30 Seconds to Mars
    18. Bad Romance – 30 Seconds to Mars OR Lady GaGa (love both!)
    19. Sleepwalker – Adam Lambert
    20. Talking Body – Tove Lo

Yeah, I know. It’s a weird mix. But that’s what keeps the words coming!

And I’m always looking for new artists – Who are your favorite bands?

About Afraid to Fly

Once a fearless fighter pilot, Commander Travis Wilson is now confined to a desk. It’s been eight years since the near-fatal crash that grounded him, and it still rules his life thanks to relentless back pain.

Lieutenant Commander Clint Fraser almost drowned in a bottle after a highly classified catastrophe while piloting a drone. His downward spiral cost him his marriage and kids, but he’s sober now and getting his life back on track. He’s traded drones for a desk, and he’s determined to reconcile with his kids and navigate the choppy waters of PTSD.

Clint has been on Travis’s radar ever since he transferred to Anchor Point. When Clint comes out to his colleagues, it’s a disaster, but there’s a silver lining: now that Travis knows Clint is into men, the chemistry between them explodes.

It’s all fun and games until emotions get involved. Clint’s never been in love with a man before. Travis has, and a decade later, that tragic ending still haunts him. Clint needs to coax him past his fear of crashing and burning again, or their love will be grounded before takeoff.

Afraid to Fly is available January 16th from Riptide Publishing.

About the Author

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…
