Blurb: A fist fight, a snowstorm, a stolen kiss in the barn… and a second chance at love.
Ford Nixel has two law offices, two fancy condominiums, and all the right connections. In short, he has everything he wants.
The last thing he needs is his Uncle Ty’s stake in the Leaning N, a ranch that’s been in the family for generations. Ford hasn’t even been to the ranch in over a decade, not since he left his boyfriend Stoney behind and headed back to college alone.
Ford arrives at the Leaning N to find Stoney, now a single father, right where he left him. A fist fight, a snowstorm, and a stolen kiss in the barn later—Ford knows none of the heat between them has dissipated.
Review: Ford Nixel is a success by most measures. He has a pair of law offices, a thriving practice, and all the luxury he never had growing up on a ranch. Circumstances conspire to bring him back to that ranch, even though it is the last place on the planet he wants to spend any time. Obligations to the terminally ill uncle who raised him, and a tie to the land he has been avoiding for so long, draw him home. The biggest complication is facing his former friend, former roommate, and former lover in the person of Stoney. Stoney left Ford and their relationship at college, and returned to the ranch to marry a girl. When Ford returns home to the ranch, he finds out Stoney has also fathered a son. Or, has he?
Stubbornness and pride got in the way of what could have been something very special. Now, with Stoney’s wife dead, his son open to the fact his father is gay, and the ranch securely in Ford’s hands, what’s to stop them from reigniting the romance?
John Solo takes a fairly average romance story and gives it new life. His narration makes the characters pop. From an elderly uncle, to a hippie cook, a ten year old boy, a gruff but loveable lesbian best friend, and prissy decorators, each character has their voice, and those voices stay consistent throughout the book. The initial animosity between the main characters is portrayed with gusto, and their stumbling and frustrating reconnection is displayed with heart. Each side character adds another layer of enjoyment to the plot. It’s always a great thing when a narrator can take a few visual clues from the author and create a full voice for even the bit parts.
The narration is a standout. The story is crisp and fast paced. It feels like a much longer book than its length implies because the story is complete and the narration is top quality. This book is a definite buy for both story and narration.
