We’re so pleased to welcome author Elle Keaton today to introduce her new book, Storm Season, book one in the Accidental Roots series. She’s here to talk romantic suspense with us, and is also offering one lucky reader the chance to win an e-copy of the book, so be sure to check out the entry details below.
Welcome, Elle!
Hello everyone! Elle Keaton here, very excited (and nervous) to be celebrating the release of Storm Season, the first in my Accidental Roots series. I want to thank everyone for joining me today, it means so much! I also want to thank The Novel Approach for hosting me.
Storm Season is close to my heart, a tribute to my favorite romance genre; romantic suspense. I’ve always loved mysteries and romance, they’re like chocolate and peanut butter, peas and carrots, tequila and salt…
Storm Season is set in the fictional town of Skagit (real river) in Washington State. Adam Klay returns to his hometown after many years, to lay his father to rest. Micah Ryan is an awkward loner who accidently (ahhaha) catches Adam’s interest. Unfortunately, there are unsavory elements in Skagit who see one, or both of them, as a threat. Let the adventure begin!
Funny, and true, story, I didn’t want to learn to read. Anyone who has met me in real life…well, if I was younger I would have been diagnosed with ADD. I floundered, fidgeted and daydreamed. Until I found Nancy Drew. Talk about never looking back. Devoured them. Then came Daphne du Maurier and then, well you get the picture. I do love a spooky, atmospheric read.
*Wondering, what mystery series/authors are readers’ favorites?
*What are pet peeve tropes? For instance; I love the standard village mystery, but not ‘cozy’s’. Not a huge fan of the miserable hardboiled detective.
Storm Season isn’t Nancy Drew, there are a lot more sexy times, but as a reader and writer I have always enjoyed that character who, much like Nancy, is smart and solves the mystery before the experts – or in spite of them. There are intense elements; Adam’s past is complicated and Micah has lost his entire family, but on the whole Storm Season is fairly lighthearted, you are meant to laugh. Life without laughter is nothing.
*Angst or no Angst? I love angst, but it has to be resolvable, or at least settled between the characters.
My favorite scene without giving anything away, agh!? My absolute favorite scene occurs very late, maybe we can talk about that one in the future – currently four books planned, I am half way through the third.
Micah takes Adam on a side trip into the North Cascades, he won’t tell him where they are going. They end up at a point on the Skagit river where bald eagles have nested for years, literally hundreds. It’s breathtaking. Hopefully it won’t take readers out of the story but this side trip gives both characters a chance to breathe a little, away from the mayhem going on. A chance, for Adam especially, to put aside his worries and re-experience the wonder of our little corner of the world. And a bear. But just a black bear, you know, because they are cute and friendly. *Snorts*
*What are readers favorite novels that are very place specific?
Wrapping this up by saying my characters have the most hilarious conversations. Sometimes they happen in my head when I am not expecting them, like I am at my RL work, innocently staring into space, and I have to quickly write them down! If you enjoy Storm Season, Adam and Micah keep making appearances, you won’t be left wondering where they have disappeared to. In fact I have the niggling of an idea for a holiday short…with family.
Thank you again for having me!

About the Book
They say you can’t go home again, Adam Klay doesn’t intend to until the death of his father, a famous artist, forces his return to Skagit, Washington. Cleaning up his father’s chaotic life was never on Adam’s bucket list. Worse, Adam finds himself inexplicably drawn to the elusive, terminally-clumsy, gorgeous, Micah Ryan. No way is he getting involved with someone from his hometown, he’s always insisted the best view of Skagit was in his rearview mirror.
Micah Ryan has been coasting on auto-pilot since his family was killed in a car accident a decade earlier. He runs a web business and has an irritable cat. He hardly leaves his house, unless it is for his afternoon espresso. His world tips upside down when Adam Klay rolls into town. For the first time in years, he feels alive. Unfortunately, Micah’s return to the living has been noticed and is not appreciated.
Someone has a secret. Someone is exploiting the vulnerable youth population in Skagit. Teenagers are disappearing, young women turning up dead, the dirty secrets of Skagit are surfacing.

About the Author
Author, photographer, rare Pacific Northwest Native, Elle grew up in Seattle, WA., with the Cascade Mountain range to the east and Olympics to the west. Less than two hours northwest lie the majestic San Juan Islands. To the northeast is the Methow Valley and the scrub deserts of Eastern Washington. Geography ripe with material.
A graduate of Western Washington University, Elle has a BS in biology which taught her to be tenacious. The closest she has come to biology since then is having two kids. Like an experiment or something. She’s lived in four states (none of which were gaseous), London England, and Hong Kong; always knows what time it is, and has no problem finding parking even in the most difficult places. Cannot balance a checking account.
Elle’s series Accidental Roots, mostly set in the Skagit Valley of Western Washington, will make its debut spring of 2017. Storm Season is tender, sometimes irreverent, full of nosy neighbors and help when the hero didn’t think he needed it. Writing has always been a passion but not something she was able to take seriously until recently. Now her head is full of ideas and not enough time in each day.

I really like Rhys Ford & Josh Lanyon. Pet peeve trope is the big misunderstanding because they didn’t communicate. Yes to angst if I’m in the mood. Again, going back to Rhys Ford – her Dirty series and the Half Moon Bay series; the first few books of Sinners series.
I love Rhys Ford and Josh Lanyon as well! Especially Rhys Ford, such imagination! When I look at my purchase history on my kindle they are amongst the very first. Okay-Josh was the very first m/m author I read, I think Rhys published the first Dirty book (heh) about six months later. Suzanne Brockman was the first author I read who included an m/m storyline with Robin and Jules…sighs. <3

Thank you for the interview. I like cozy mysteries myself, I find them amusing and fairly entertaining. My pet peeve is young adults coming out. Maybe it is because my teens are very far away, it just makes me tired reading about it…
You are welcome! This is such an honor for me, I am so glad you stopped by. I generally don’t read YA queer romance, I think for the very reason you are mentioning. There are a few I have really enjoyed (I just spent ten minutes trying to find titles, if remember I will post).
I love Rhys Ford’s Half Moon Bay series and C.S. Poe The Mystery of Nevermore. They are good mystery/romance novels.
I love a bit of angst as indeed it is solvable between the two MC’s.
My pet peeve trope would be friends to lovers.
Rhys!!!…had the honor of reading the arc for her new book out the 17th….incredible (not a mystery tho!). I don’t mind friends to lovers if the characters admit to an attraction before at some point. When they go out for drinks and are suddenly ‘whoa hot guy dying of the lust’, …. that I can’t stand. :)
I enjoyed the interview it great getting to know you. “Adrien English Mysteries” By Josh Lanyon and “More Heat Than The Sun” Series By John Wiltshire are among my favourite Mystery series. I don’t like “cosy” mysteries but I like most other mystery books. I enjoy stories with angst as long as it’s not over the top.
I’ve been meaning to pick up the Wiltshire series! I like angst in books I read but I have a hard time writing it! I find my characters like to converse and solve their issues :), maybe I’ve learned something as I have gotten older!
This looks really good!! I’m not a fan of angst. It just makes me crazy. However a good mystery as well as a good shifter series always perks me up. Love a little paranormal in my boring life…LOL
I’ve really been enjoying The Thirds….such a guilty pleasure! I really hope you enjoy it! Thank you for stopping by :)
Did you see Lisa Oliver has a new shifter book coming out? It’s called A Tiger’s Tale. Should be good, she has a great voice.

Elle, thank you for letting me review Storm Season for TNA. Excellent mystery and amazing characters. Bring on the next installment, hope it’s Carroll Weir.
!!!! Okay….so I am currently working on Weir (I LOVE him) but somebody else snuck in first! Wasn’t my plan! They totally cut in line.
The next book features Joey James and Buck Swanfeldt….right?!
Elle
Also, thank you for the lovely and thoughtful review!

Josh Lanyon will be the first and foremost mystery/romance author in my head. I think her “Adrien English” series is pretty much clutched as my favorite series of all time. Of course she also has a numerous mystery series, with “The Mermaid Murder” as one of her latest installment.
But aside from that, I also like Lou Harper’s “LA Paranormal” series, the high-esteemed Victor J. Banis with his “Deadly Mysteries” series, Neil Plakcy with his “Mahu series”. In the paranormal genre, there’s Jordan L. Hawk with her “Whyborne & Griffin” as well as “Hex” series and of course Jordan Castillo Price with her “Psycop” series
!! Adrien (with an ‘e’), all the sighs, love Josh. I also love the Mahu series! I put it down for a while but have recently caught up.
Totally agree with you on Jordan L. Hawk, hard for me to decide which series I prefer Whyborne or Hex :). Both Jordans are amazing world builders. I have made one attempt at a space opera, it didn’t go well, although I learned a lot from writing it.
I have this crazy idea that I haven’t fully formed yet, I am a big fan of Rex Stout — I think it could be fun to play with his Nero/Archie character relationship. He was a pretty amazing writer (for a hack:)) and also a mathematical genius!
THIRDS series for sure, Josh Lanyon is a favorite. The Sixth Sense series by Sarah Madison
Sixth sense, I am not sure I have heard of that one! Thanks for the tip!
Elle
Congrats on the new release! And thanks for the post. It was great to know more about you and your debut novel Good luck!
Fav mystery series of mine is More Heat Than The Sun By John Wiltshire. Just love it…
Congrats on releasing Storm Season!
