Blurb: “I should put you over my knee and spank you for teasing me…”

Jake’s new boss, Cal Mackenzie, is hotter than hell. Fortified by a little liquid bravery on a work night out, Jake makes his move and finds out that Cal is interested too. To Jake’s dismay, Cal makes it clear that nothing is going to happen as long as they work together. Fortunately for both of them, this is just a temp job and there’s only a week left in the contract.

Cal admonishes Jake to behave while he waits, but as the week drags on, Jake can’t resist flirting and teasing. When Friday finally arrives, Cal shows Jake what happens to people who can’t follow his rules. Jake learns a surprisingly enjoyable lesson over Cal’s knee—one that he won’t forget in a hurry.

Review: Jay Northcote’s An Invitation—aptly published originally in the Dreamspinner Press anthology, Juicy Bits—is pretty much just a sexy little office vignette. A juicy bit. Northcote’s intent, clearly, was to write a steamy, erotic, office romp, which he definitely did. And, at only thirty-five pages, there’s just not the space for there to be much more to it. I knew these things going in…So, I don’t know why I felt a little bit let down by the story. Somehow, I felt like the blurb promised more.

I will agree one-hundred-and-fifty-percent with the first line of the blurb. Cal was absolutely hotter than hell. Described in the story as basically a Scottish accented Daniel Craig, it was no surprise that Cal had Jake panting for him. He was all sexy confidence and authority. Rawr! I didn’t really get a feeling for Jake in the story at all, though. Other than he was hot for Cal. I definitely felt the chemistry coming from Cal in the final scene, before he had Jake bent over his lap, but, for me, the heat was pretty one sided.

I dunno. Dang. This one was just OK for me. *sigh* It wasn’t terrible by any means. But, it wasn’t really memorable either. I’m bummed because I really dig Jay Northcote’s stuff, so I’m not used to being disappointed by one of his stories. Who knows…if my expectation had been more in line going in, and I had been looking for just a fun little sex scene, it could have been a completely different reading experience. I’m sure many people will enjoy this for exactly what it’s supposed to be. Some steamy office fun.
