Blurb: Justin Warfield ran away to Italy to put the events of last summer and a certain dark-haired private eye behind him, to no avail. If anything, he can’t help but rehash what happened over and over. When he finally returns to South Carolina, the hotel he runs with his brother has suffered a series of incidents that are starting to look less accidental after a death threat is received.
Not satisfied that Moses Lee and his local police will find the culprit, Peter Warfield calls in the services of his good friend Marcus Drummond to help. Marcus is torn. He wants to help his friend, but he also knows that if Justin has moved on after their failed flirtation last summer, he will be devastated.
Tensions mount as danger seems to follow them at every turn, stalking them as they get closer to solving the mystery of who is behind the sabotage of the hotel.
Review: Justin Warfield was deep in the closet, but because of situations that came to a head, he was finally able to come out. Justin had hurt himself and people he cared for, following his father’s orders to the letter. When it brought pain to two families, he left for Italy but has now returned to Beaufort, South Carolina.
Justin had turned over the management of the Warfield Hotel to his brother, Peter. There have been some odd occurrences happening at the hotel, so Peter decides to call in a favor—he asks his best friend and private investigator, Marcus Drummond, to come and check out the situation. Marcus and Justin have a history and things ended badly, so besides trying to resolve all the chaos that happens around them, they have doubts about whether they can even be friends.
Police Chief Moses Lee is vicious, seeking revenge, and will do anything to destroy the Warfields, especially Justin. He knows about the incidences at the Warfield but blows them off. Moses is after one thing, a journal that was written by Justin’s father, and he’ll do anything to get his hands on it.
C.J. Baty has created a good, tension and danger filled mystery with old southern family history and drama, and where everyone seems to have their own secrets. Some of the family patriarchs make cold, hard rules for their families, but unfortunately, those same patriarchs don’t follow their rules themselves and it causes chaos as time passes on. Crashing Waves has a good pace and a solid plot, a good turn for the MCs and some new developments in other characters. I highly recommend reading Drifting Sands, book one in this series, first as this book picks up where book one ends. I have to admit this author has become a favorite of mine, and I am so looking forward to the next book in the Warfield Hotel Mysteries series.
