Welcome, Lynn!
Hi, I’m Lynn Michaels, here to talk about the inspiration behind Holeshot 2. Both Holeshot books have come from a tender place inside me and I’d like to share that with you.
When I was young, my dad raced dirt bikes. I remember going to the races and my dad working on the bikes with his brother and his friends. We lived on a red dirt road in Northwest Florida and I can recall playing there while my father rode in circles around me. Those good times didn’t last though. He died of cancer just a few years later. However, the love of the bikes stayed with me.
Flash forward about so many years (not telling how many ~Ha!) and I had a moment of brilliance. I flipped through the TV channels just surfing for something to watch and I stopped on a Supercross race. Wow! It caught my attention…brought back all those memories of my dad, and I couldn’t help but wonder how my life might have been different had he lived. I know we all think about things like this, but this time…I thought about what if we stayed in that motocross world and what if I could have raced. That one thought created Davey McAllister and the rest was history… The Holeshot was born.
When I got to the second book, I needed to dig deeper, and research more. I watched races, interviews, behind the scenes segments, anything and everything I could find. Then I started mashing it all together. I pulled both Tate and Pilot from the first book and everything seemed to be going well, except I kept feeling like something was missing. Then, I thought about my dad again. His blue eyes kept coming back to me and that’s when Bryce got written in, but he wasn’t content to be a secondary character and he would not wait for his own story. He got right there in the middle of everything. I’d like to think that’s how my dad was…fierce and determined and brave. That’s how Bryce is and I think he made the story better because of it.
I hope you enjoy Holeshot 2.
