Cameos

One of the reasons I was thrilled when Anne asked me to co-write with her in the Bluewater Bay universe is that I got to give cameo appearances to some of my favorite characters in the series. Since Nate is a theater guy, I decided to continue the cameo motif and give cameos (of a sort) to people I knew from my own theater days.

When Nate chooses a movie to watch with Seth, he picks Big Eden. If you haven’t seen it, do—it’s available for streaming on Netflix at the moment, if you’ve got that option. As Nate says in For a Good Time, Call…, “It’s a really sweet gay love story where the people in a small town aren’t all bigoted, homophobic assholes.” Big Eden features two actors I know from my theater past: one from my performance days, and one from later, when I had donned my administrator’s hat.

I was in the UCI drama program at the same time as Arye Gross, the lead in Big Eden. We also attended the South Coast Repertory summer conservatory together and appeared in Wild Oats at SCR before I moved to the east coast. Arye continued to work in theater in Southern California—and later in film and TV. I remember the first time I saw his name before the title in a movie ad—it was for House 2: The Second Story back in the mid-eighties. Since then, I’m always jazzed when I catch another one of his appearances.

When I was a theater administration student at Yale Drama School, I did my second year internship as the business manager at New Playwrights’ Theater in Washington, DC. That internship was a lesson in fortitude—the theater was having serious cash flow problems at the time, so I was in the position of talking to our creditors (the newspaper where we ran ads for our shows, for instance) and saying things like, “I know we owe you six thousand dollars, but can I pay you two hundred this week?”

Veanne Cox, who plays Mary Margaret in Big Eden, was appearing there in a very popular musical, Out of the Reach of Children. As part of my duties, I wrote her paychecks. New Playwrights’ may have been strapped for cash, but we always paid our performers!

The next time I saw Veanne was as one of the stepsisters in the Brandi/Whitney Houston version of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Check it out, if you can find it. She’s a total hoot.

About the Book
