Wade Porter spent his whole life in the shadow of a lover who doled out snippets of love and time as he saw fit—and who insisted that love stay deep in the closet. But now that man is gone, and Wade finds the oceanside cottage where they spent so many weekends together in the Florida Keys cold and empty. He has come one last time, not even sure he wants to keep living.
To his surprise, the house next door is occupied by another bereaved and lonely man. Kent Walker is an artist of romantic gay paintings who is open to the future—and determinedly interested in Wade. Kent wants to show Wade the beauty in being an openly gay man and the possibilities for a real relationship.
Maybe Kent can help Wade let go of the past and discover a better way to live—and love.

Review: It’s been a while since I’ve read a B.G. Thomas book, and I’m glad I picked up New Lease. What I enjoyed most as I read was how imperfect the main character was. Wade is a man in the latter half of middle age. He’d lost a lover and turned to alcohol to drown away the pain. Spending two weeks in a cottage by the beach, one he’d shared with his love, Wade meets the slightly younger and incredibly sexy Walker, and as the story unfolds, we learn of Wade’s history in addition to watching the new romance unfold.
One caveat I always have when reading shorter stories is that characters and plotlines can’t be as fully developed as in longer novels. New Lease is no exception, but what Mr. Thomas did was focus on the characters. Wade, in particular, was well-developed. Through him, I was able to reflect on the choices we make, often ones that are made out of insecurity, and examine the dangers of clinging to less than we deserve. Years can waste away, slipping through our proverbial fingers.
In terms of the speed of Walker and Wade’s connection and some of the twists and turns thrown in, all expected in a shorter novel, New Lease packed an emotional punch. One I enjoyed.
