Blurb: After having been kicked off the family ranch by his father, Marc Poulson has made a new home for himself as the foreman of the Double R Ranch. His fellow ranch hands are his family, but he’s still not complete without Casey Morgan, his counterpart at the neighboring Del Rio Ranch. In the middle of a feud with his one-time best friend, Marc struggles to understand why Casey would rather take a swing at him than talk to him. He wants to put the past behind them and rebuild what they once had and make their relationship stronger than ever, but Casey is having none of it.
Casey has his own demons to deal with, and Marc serves as a reminder to things he’d rather forget. Casey can’t see beyond the past and continues to make mistakes that put both him and Marc in harms way. After one close call too many, Casey must decide whether his past is more important than his future, or if he can live with Marc walking out of his life—possibly forever.
Review: Marc Poulson only wanted to be himself, but coming out to his father led to Marc leaving behind his mother, younger brother, Lance, and the Mustang Ranch. Marc found a better life as foreman on the Double R Ranch, owned by Ryan Whitcomb.
Casey Morgan is a foreman for the Del Rio Ranch, owned by Trent Jefferson. Casey and Marc were once friends, with both ranches working closely together, but something led Marc and Casey to become enemies. After their third bar fight, the Sheriff gives them no more chances and arrests them. Trent and Ryan bail out their foremen, but they are bound and determined to make Marc and Casey work together.
Ryan and Trent can’t afford to lose Marc and Casey; they’re good at what they do, but this is the last chance to keep their jobs. Ryan and Trent come up with a plan—Marc and Casey are to head into the mountains and start getting ready for bringing the cattle back to the ranches before bad weather sets in. Marc is inclined to call a truce, but Casey is still being stubborn.
Just when things between Marc and Casey are improving, misunderstandings and mistakes are made. Casey has too much baggage from his past, and doesn’t know how to accept his sexuality. Someone from Marc’s past appears, and it brings heartbreak and turmoil to both Marc and Casey.
Little do Marc and Casey realize that there is someone out there ready to give his all to get these two cowboys together, because he knows they belong with each other.
Renee Stevens brings readers a powerful story of two cowboys who are trying to find their way through the ups and downs of life. Barbed Wire Cowboy is about recognizing, at some point, the need for professional help to get past the dark times of life. It’s a roller coaster ride of emotions: anger, deceit, happiness, love, denial, family tragedy, and reuniting on different levels. The plot keeps you pondering if these two men will ever mend or find a way to even a friendship together. Stevens also does an incredible job of describing the everyday life of cowboys and the hard work they do to keep ranches up and running. I’m looking forward to more from Renee Stevens.
