Hello, Internet! Welcome back to the Art of Lex Chase. I’m your one and only host, Lex! Every month here at The Novel Approach, I share a new art piece by yours truly. If it has completely escaped your notice, I’m an author with Dreamspinner Press and DSP Publications, but I’m also a digital artist. Got the BFA to prove it! So if you’re looking for custom art for swag, covers, posters, blog tours, et cetera, I’m your person!
Did you miss last month’s piece? Don’t fret! I shared one of my original characters, Iris, from my personal project, Grow, as well as a hearty excerpt from Chapter One. You can see it over here!
Today, I’m sharing a twofer! The first is a recently completed commission that I did for Tali Spencer. If you don’t know Tali, she’s one of my favorite authors, and all around good human. She typically writes spec fic, and one of my faves is Thick as Thieves. Really. Just read it. I’ll wait. Well, Tali also participated in Dreamspinner’s States of Love line, a contemporary only line featuring stand alone stories, each one taking place in a different state. Mine, The Unlikely Prospect, took place in my homestate of Maine. It was likewise my first contemporary.
It was also Tali’s first foray into contemporary as well, and her tale Breaking the Ice, takes place in her homestate of Wisconsin. It’s all about ice fishing on Lake Winnebago, and this one proved to be a challenge. I learned all about ice fishing, their gear, ice shanties, and events like the Sturgeon Stampede. Tali also lets me experiment when she commissions me, so this was my first time experimenting with a background. While not complicated looking, previous techniques I had experimented with in other pieces served me well. I don’t plan to offer backgrounds in my commissions just yet until I nail them down efficiently.
Enjoy!

The second, is an oldie but a goodie! More Grow boys! If you recall from last month’s post we met Iris’s “imaginary friend” Muir. Which spoiler alert, he’s quite real. And he’s kind of the crux of the whole issue. He has a long history in the world of Grow, and as I joke, he’s the Little Black Dress as in he goes with everything. He’s been involved and *cough* involved with every aspect of Iris’s life and family. From Iris’s mother, Violet, and even Iris’s father, which Muir and he share a very deep connection. Muir’s my baby and in the Tumblr vernacular is pretty much a big bag of dicks, but you just want him to be happy and okay in the end. So here’s one of my fave pieces of him, when I first brought this jackass to life.

About the Artist
Pop culture, comics, anime, and…cannibals?
These are a just a few things that go through Lex Chase s head at any given moment. As an author, she specializes in stories of action, adventure, and broken yet true love. As an artist, she makes no apologies for drawing Hannibal’s Hannigram all the time.
Writing about boys who put the “massively fun” in massively dysfunctional, and drawing characters with questionable morals, or the precious cinnamon roll with questionable morals, gives her great pleasure. Lex knows everyone has a vice, and she’s willing to put stylus to tablet for yours.
